That's it from Old Trafford - United go through top, and can look forward to a more favourable knockout draw. I've been Tom J Doyle, and thanks for joining us tonight. Bye for now.
It was far from a vintage performance from the hosts, but Moyes won't care a jot as his side avoid a third straight home defeat. Their league form may be poor, but 14 points from a possible 18 in Europe is nothing to be sniffed at.
Shakhtar waste the chance, and that's it! Man Utd top Group A courtesy of Phil Jones' fine volley, and Shakhtar go out as Leverkusen join the Red Devils in the last 16.
90' + 2'
Valencia gives away a free kick for a high foot and Shakhtar will have one last chance to put the ball in the United box...
90' + 1'
Close for Van Persie! The Dutch striker beats his marker in the box and dinks a cute effort over Pyatov, but can only find the side netting.
Two minutes of injury time here, and United will top the group as things stand.
Rooney is almost caught in possession in the middle here but somewhat fortunately wins a free kick. We're into the final few minutes.
A final change for United now as Buttner - who appears to be limping and holding his groin - is replaced by Antonio Valencia.
Srna catches a sweet volley from 18 yards out, but it's straight at De Gea and he holds on well.
The visitors are pushing for an equaliser, but they look as though they know they're going out. Mircea Lucescu will be disappointed, as United were here for the taking in the first half.
Boom! Cleverley smashes his shot over from the corner. The midfielder caught the ball sweetly, but it was always rising.
Lovely skill from Januzaj on the wing as he controls with his chest before flicking the ball over a Shakhtar head - he feeds Van Persie who wins a corner.
Yellow Card Olexandr Kucher
Kucher gets a booking for dissent now - Shakhtar can feel this one slipping away from them.
Yellow Card Darijo Srna
Shakhtar have had 14 shots and eight on target; United have had eight and three, but they're the side that's ahead.
Yellow Card Tom Cleverley
Saying that, Cleverley's just earnt himself a booking for a challenge on Srna - the right-back is certainly in the wars tonight.
Rooney and Cleverley link well on the edge of the Shakhtar box but the striker can't quite play the midfielder through. Cleverley's made a difference since coming on, and has offered more incision than Giggs.
If you want to ask Owen Hargreaves about Jones' opener, then Tweet @Heineken and use the #ShareTheSofa hashtag to get in touch with the two-time Champions League winner.
Srna nips in ahead of Buttner and pushes on, and Shakhtar win a corner after a cross hits Evans. The visitors are going out at the rate, and need something quickly.
Yellow Card Alexander Büttner
Buttner absolutely clatters into Srna on the wing here, taking out the Shakhtar defender and earning himself a deserved booking in the process.
So the goal didn't come through Rooney then - that makes me look a little foolish. Jones has two goals in this season's Champions League now - a great return for a promising talent.
Goal Phil Jones
JONES VOLLEYS HOME!!! That's a fine strike by the England youngster as Van Persie whips in a corner and Shakhtar fail to clear, leaving the midfielder with a free shot from 10 yards which he buries past Pyatov. A fine strike, and United lead.
If a goal is coming for United, it'll most likely be through Rooney - he has been involved in six goals (two scored, four assists) in his last six Champions League appearances, says Opta Sports.
The subs almost make an immediate impact as Cleverley does well to find Rooney, and the striker slips a cute pass through to Van Persie. A Shakhtar defender almost puts through his own net in stopping the forward, but Pyatov does well to blcok it.
Robin van Persie
Van Persie replaces Young - the winger had a better second half than his first, but time is surely running out for his United career. Cleverley also replaces Giggs, while Shakhtar swap Brazilians as Taison makes way for Bernard.
Buttner breaks forward well and whips in a cross but it's put out for a corner. Now for the United subs...
Close for Rooney! The striker tries a trademark chip from 22 yards, but he can only find the top of Pyatov's net with the keeper well beaten - he's actually kneeling down by the time the shot hits the net. So unlucky for United there.
Young almost scores a freak goal now as he overhits a cross which swerves wildly at the last minute and almost catches out Pyatov, but it goes just wide.
Chance for Kagawa! Young does well down the left and puts in a cross for the Japanese, whose volley is well saved by Pyatov for a corner.
Van Persie will be the first substitution of the evening as he gets ready here - that should give United a lift, but if they can't get the ball to him, it doesn't really matter.
News is also coming through that Galatasaray v Juventus has been abandoned due to heavy snowfall - that leaves the fate of both sides undecided until a future date.
Leverkusen have gone ahead at Real Sociedad - as it stands the Germans are going through, so Shakhtar will need to push on now.
Poor old Taison - Luiz Adriano picks Jones' pocket in midfield and feeds the forward on the right of the box, but the forward miskicks and slips when trying to shoot, much to the dleight of the United supporters.
United are really pressing now as Young does well to find Kagawa and Pyatov is drawn out - Giggs is on the ball but tries to find Rooney with a pass, and it's intercepted and cleared. He maybe should have tried a shot there.
Januzaj tries to put a cross in but it's blocked by a Shakhtar hand, and United win the free kick. Young swings in a decent ball but Pyatov punches clear with Rooney lurking.
Srna has to stoop low to head away from under his own bar here and puts it out for a corner - both sides are pressing for an early goal.
Rakitskiy hits the post! The ball falls to the defender from the corner and his shot is deflected onto the woodwork and out for another corner. De Gea was well beaten, and Shakhtar should be ahead.
Costa does a flip-flap around Buttner and slams the ball across goal, but Rafael does well to block a shot on the opposite side out for a corner.
The second half is underway at Old Trafford, and Young lsoes the ball to Fred. It's not the winger's night.
The sides are out again - can United guarantee top spot with a draw?
Have you got any questions for Owen Hargreaves on that first half? Tweet @Heineken and use the #ShareTheSofa hashtag to get in touch with the former United midfielder.
Shakhtar have played English teams seven times, and have always scored - Moyes, take note.
It's going well for De Gea meanwhile - this would be his fourth straight clean sheet in the Champions League.
United have failed to score in just one of their last 14 Champions League home games, according to Opta Sports - they looked better as the half progressed, but still seem disjointed.
That's the interval, and it's 0-0. On the balance of play that's probably a fair scoreline, but Ashley Young wasted two gilt-edged chances. Neither United nor Shakhtar did enough in front of goal to go ahead, but David Moyes will feel his side can push on now.
We'll have no injury time here curiously...
Chance for Young! The winger is through again on the left after being found by Rooney, but after taking a touch he shanks his shot wide of Pyatov's right-hand post with the goal gaping. That is simply poor.
Jones goes in hard on Rakitskiy here - nobody really wants to be tackled by Jones, and he felt that.
Five minutes till half-time, and United continue to prod and poke the ball about without any real incisive edge. They keep having to push the ball back to Evans and Ferdinand, and are clearly lacking a player to dictate the tempo.
United are getting some joy on the counter-attack tonight - but surely the home crowd will expect them to push on and dominate this game a little more.
What a miss from Young! The United winger pressures Srna and finds himself through on goal with a bouncing ball and an onrushing Pyatov, but his side-footed volley goes just wide with Rooney up alongside him. That pretty much sums up Young's United career.
United are on the ropes here as Teixeira's cross deflects across goal and wide of De Gea's left-hand post for a corner. Old Trafford is very, very quiet.
Ferdinand gets caught on the ball badly and Teixeira breaks through, but Fred wastes the cut-back at the back post by shanking his shot. That's another let-off.
Rooney curls his effort over the wall but can only find the side netting - some of the crowd think it's gone in, but that's better from the hosts.
Young finds Rooney on the wing as United break, and Januzaj is chopped down 30 yards from goal. Cue Rooney...
The home crowd are getting a bit restless now as United continue to waste the ball while Shakhtar cause some panic in their penalty area, but United get it clear.
Teixeira goes on a fine run through the centre of United's team but disappoints with his finish as he can only shoot low at De Gea. A great run from the forward, but Jones and Giggs have to get closer to him.
Better from United now as Rooney tries to thread through Kagawa, but Pyatov is off his line quickly to gather the ball. Neither player has seen too much of the ball tonight, and their team-mates will have to get it to them more often.
Shakhtar are looking dangerous as they go forward here - they're moving the ball about well and are getting into dangerous positions, while United simply look ponderous.
A reminder now that Owen Hargreaves is tweeting on this game tonight - if you've got any questions for the former United midfielder, tweet @Heineken and use the #ShareTheSofa hashtag.
Costa beats Buttner on the wing before cutting inside and unleashing a fierce drive at goal, but it flashes three yards wide of De Gea's left-hand post. A warning for the hosts there.
Januzaj goes close! The youngster chests the ball down in the area before controlling and unleashing a fierce shot, which Pyatov has to beat away. Ashley Young, predictably, skies the rebound.
United have had 65 per cent of the possession so far, but Shakhtar lead them on the shot count by two to none.
It's almost catastrophe for De Gea here as he comes out to meet a long ball outside his area and takes too many touches, but he just manages to poke the ball away from Teixeira.
Chance for Teixeira! The Brazilian is through on goal after a fine pass from midfield, but can only put his left-footed shot inches wide of De Gea's left-hand post with the keeper beaten. Jonny Evans did just enough to put him off, but that's a let-off for United.
it's a bit pedestrian at the moment - United are struggling to control the ball in the centre of the pitch, and it's obvious that Michael Carrick is a big miss.
Buttner has the ball on the left wing again but hits in a poor cross that rolls harmlessly to a defender. Evra's not been in the best of form lately, but he'll have to produce a better end product to displace the Frenchman.
Fred tries a speculative 25-yarder but it's weak and bounces into DDavid De Gea's arms. It'll have to be a lot better to beat the Spaniard from that range.
United are linking well here as Januzaj finds Rooney in the box, but Giggs doesn't make a move for the through-ball. It looks like he thought he was offside, but the Welshman was in fact on.
Chance for Jones! The youngster breaks into the box on the right and forces his way past Stepanenko, and Pyatov has to make a low save with his feet at the near post. An enterprising run from Jones there.
If the crowd are not happy with Moyes then they're not showing it, as songs for the manager are ringing around the stadium.
United put together their first decent move with Kagawa shifting the ball out left, but Buttner's cross has too much on it for Adnan Januzaj at the back post. Promising for the hosts.
Teixeira tries to unleash a shot from 25 yards but his shot is blocked down quickly.
We're underway at Old Trafford! The crows are in good voice despite recent failings, and that will help to settle the United players.
The players are standing in front of a banner that reads: "Madiba, the world will never forget" - a touching tribute to Nelson Mandela.
If Man Utd fail to win against Shakhtar tonight it will be the first time they've gone four games without a win since Sept 2008, says Opta Sports.
The sides are coming out of the tunnel now. United are through, but will want that top spot. And Moyes will be desperate to avoid three defeats at the Theatre of Dreams on the trot.
We're just under 10 minutes from kick-off now, and Rio Ferdinand is practising some headers against a wall. Kids, take note - millionaire footballers still use walls.
Darijo Srna (a favourite of Football Manager players) starts at right-back for Shakhtar, and his set-pieces will also be a threat tonight. He's got a fair old shot on him, and can whip a cross too.
It's another chance meanwhile for Moyes to see how Shinji Kagawa and Rooney link up, with the Japanese playmaker starting in behind the England striker. It worked brilliantly away to Leverkusen, and the manager will be hoping for the same again.
The hosts should be wary of forward Taison, who scored the equaliser when the sides drew 1-1 in Ukraine back in October. Douglas Costa and Alex Teixeira also offer a tricky attacking threat, so the United back line needs to be sharp tonight.
That United line-up represents six changes from the side that lost to Newcastle last Saturday. Moyes will want to keep his squad fresh, but it may also be a warning for the likes of Evra and Nani to buck up their ideas.
The big team news for United is that Robin van Persie starts on the bench, with Wayne Rooney leading the line on his own. Alexander Buttner starts at left-back, while Phil Jones and Ryan Giggs line up in central midfield.
Shakhtar XI: Pyatov, Srna, Kucher, Rakitskiy, Shevchuk, Fred, Stepanenko, Douglas Costa, Alex Teixeira, Taison, Luiz Adriano. Subs: Kanibolotskiy, Hubschman, Bernard, Eduardo, Fernando, Ferreyra, Kryvtsov.
Man Utd XI: De Gea, Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Buttner, Jones, Giggs, Young, Kagawa, Januzaj, Rooney. Subs: Lindegaard, Anderson, Hernandez, Nani, van Persie, Cleverley, Valencia.
With United picking up one point from their last three Premier League games and losing their last two home games to Everton and Newcastle, Shakhtar will be confident they can trouble the hosts - threee straight home defeats would be unthinkable for United supporters.
United's 5-0 win at Leverkusen on matchday five secured their qualification for the knockout stage, but Shakhtar would overtake them at the top of Group A if they were to earn a first ever victory in England.
David Moyes' men will look to wrap up first place with a win, while the visitors need to match Bayer Leverkusen's result at Real Sociedad to guarantee they will join them in the last 16.
