E. van der Sar
Had almost nothing to do but stayed awake and distribution was solid.
Wearing the Manchester United armband again, the central defender looked slightly off the pace as he committed fouls in the first 10 minutes but was excellent thereafter.
Showed impressive tenacity and forward running added pace and energy to United attacks.
The Northern Irish defender was handed a surprise start but generally coped well with the little attacking threat posed by Everton. Made some alert interceptions and robust challenges.
Looked uncomfortable at left-back, barely crossing the halfway line and failing to support Nani before being replaced by Evra in the 57th minute.
Picked up the ball in dangerous positions but far too over-elaborate once in the penalty box. Thought he had scored first-half opener but the ball hit Hernandez six yards out.
Started quietly but grew into the game, playing some incisive passes and adding much-needed energy to the midfield as United pushed for a goal.
Ineffectual performance in central midfield, lacking the imagination and speed of thought to break down a well-organized Everton side. Replaced by Giggs 16 minutes from time.
The Ecuadorian offered United genuine width and was able to pin back the attacking threat of Baines. Brilliant crosses throughout the game and another wonderful delivery to create the winner for Hernandez.
Pulled the strings for United for much of the game and appears to relish his partnership with Hernandez. Dropped into space and always looked to play the ball out wide or find his striker partner's run.
What a player this boy is - and he doesn't just score, he scores when it really matters. The Mexican's predatory movement was evident throughout - he tested Howard no fewer than three times - and he popped up with a great header six minutes from time.
Back at his former club, the American produced strong first-half saves to deny Hernandez. Excellent decision-making and solid handling throughout. Could do nothing about Hernandez's winner.
Subdued in the first-half but reflected the added bite in the Everton side with some strong tackles after the break. Had little joy in an attacking sense but performed his defensive tasks well.
Not his best display of the season, highlighted when he was bullied off the ball by Valencia in the first-half. The Ecuadorian's positioning high up the pitch meant Baines could not push forward to deliver his trademark crosses.
As always, fully committed and willing to risk injury with lunging tackles and full-stretch headers. Stayed alert to Hernandez's livewire movement and made some telling blocks.
Stuck to his task against Nani, getting tight to the United winger whenever he could.
The Frenchman would have infuriated his manager with his awful clearance in the build-up to United's winner. Like Jagielka, strong when the ball was in front of him but exposed by Hernandez's dangerous runs.
Dragged one first-half effort tamely at Van der Sar but was constantly willing to get on the ball and efficient in possession.
The former United captain played a crucial role at the heart of the visitors' midfield, breaking up play with solid positioning and strong challenges.
The Russian was virtually anonymous on the left side of midfield and was substituted at half-time.
The £20m-rated United target was denied a goal at Old Trafford after his fierce 69th minute strike was tipped around the post by Van der Sar. Produced a generally disappointing display, lacking ambition with his passing and failing to get close enough to Rooney when defending.
Too static and too tame against Ferdinand and Evans in the first-half, meaning Everton were unable to hold the ball. Replaced by Anichebe at the break.
- 29 T. Kuszczak
- 21 Rafael
Replaced O'Shea and offered a more natural attacking outlet on the left side.
- 6 W. Brown
Replacement for Gibson in the 74th minute. Introduction certainly fired up the crowd and he was tidy on the ball.
- 16 M. Carrick
He has said he will score a crucial goal this season - and it nearly came as he hit the post from a narrow angle after replacing Nani on 62 minutes.
- 1 J. Mucha
- 34 S. Duffy
- 30 S. Mustafi
Offered far more of an attacking threat than Beckford after coming on at half-time. Showed impressive pace and strength - and had a claim for a penalty after he went down under a challenge from Ferdinand.
Replaced Coleman 15 minutes from time but had little impact.
- 27 A. Vellios
Returned to action as a half-time substitute and played with great energy, despite never getting the chance in front of goal that he craved.
