David de Gea
Displayed poor handling for the second Leverkusen goal and was too easily beaten during the first.
A surprisingly sloppy display from the centre-back. Looked a little too casual at times and made several errors.
Overlapped impressively down the left, setting up the opener for Rooney, and defended solidly.
Defended astutely but was over-anxious in possession and reluctant to push too far forward, which limited United's effectiveness on the right flank.
Commanding in the air but not quite as dominant on the floor. Gets better with every game but has not yet recaptured his form of a few seasons ago.
Quiet in the first half but lively in the second - when he set up Van Persie's goal with a fine cross and slammed in the fourth to complete a superb counterattacking move.
Anchored the midfield alongside Carrick on his full United debut. Looked more accomplished off the ball than on it, winning a series of important headers in front of the defence.
In his first appearance of the season, the Japanese playmaker was neat and tidy without being especially menacing.
Calm, silky and seemingly effortless display. Almost untouchable in the United line-up at the moment.
If he continues this form, the headband is never going to come off. The rehabilitating No10 looked hungry, sharp and full of menace. He scored two, set up another and should have nabbed at least one more, shooting wide at an open goal from a tight angle. This was a display that captivated the home fans, who sang his name throughout and gave him a standing ovation when he was subbed.
R. van Persie
A mixture of the very good and the occasionally awful from the Dutchman. Scored acrobatically and linked up well with Rooney but missed an open goal late on.
Cost his side a crucial away point with his feeble attempt at keeping out Van Persie's acrobatic second. His handling and distribution were jittery all evening.
Did not venture forward too much and struggled to contain Valencia in the second half.
Commanding in the air but dozed off for the opener, when Rooney was left unmarked in the box.
Kept both Kagawa and Young quiet in a solid display at right-back.
Read the game well but looked less certain on the ground and was very fortunate to get away with an embarrassing slip in the box that put Rooney one-on-one with the keeper. Scored a consolation second for his side late on.
Failed to live up to his reputation in the first half but far more effective after the break, when he troubled the United defence with his pace and slipperiness. Was subbed late on.
The late replacement for the injured Bender looked a class apart from the rest of his team-mates. Used the ball shrewdly and with imagination.
The Leverkusen skipper pressed relentlessly and made up for some wonky passing by curling the equaliser beautifully into the net from outside the box via a slight deflection off Carrick.
Booked for fouling Carrick in the 19th minute, which seemed to inhibit his performance thereafter.
Set up Rolfes for the equaliser but it was his only real contribution of note. Subbed after 64 minutes.
The leading Bundesliga scorer in 2013 - with 17 goals - seemed to struggle after picking up an early knock and did not get the kind of chance that he thrives upon.
