Mallorca 3-4 Atletico Madrid: Balearic Islanders survive relegation despite defeat in thriller

(Marc Ibañez)

Atletico Madrid ends season on a high, as Aguero treble downs Mallorca in a pulsating encounter at the Iberostar stadium.

Atletico Madrid survived a second half scare to claim a thrilling 4-3 win over Mallorca at the Iberostar stadium.

A Sergio Aguero hat trick sealed the victory for Atleti, which was made to sweat late on after being up 3-0 at the hour mark. Pierre Webo also bagged a brace for Mallorca, which avoided relegation despite the defeat, thanks to Deportivo’s concurrent 2-0 loss to Valencia.

Right from the kickoff, the game was played at a fast tempo. The deadlock was broken after only 12 minutes, as a quick counter attack by Atletico saw Juanfran find Aguero in the box. The Argentine striker kept his head and slotted the ball into the far corner.

Juanfran then got on the scoresheet himself six minutes later, as he drilled a low shot into the bottom left corner after a neat pass by Jose Antonio Reyes.

Atletico comfortably saw out the remainder of the half, and increased its advantage on 59 minutes. Reyes was again the provider as he found Aguero who finished into the top corner.

It should have been game over, but two minutes later, Mallorca was awarded a penalty after Juan Valera handled the ball in the box. Jonathan De Guzman stepped up and sent David De Gea the wrong way to restore a glimmer of hope.

It got even better for Mallorca nine minutes later, after Gonzalo Castro’s cross was met by the head of Webo, to leave Mallorca only one goal away from an unlikely comeback with 19 minutes remaining.

Atletico was shell shocked, and was given a scare when Michael Pereira fired just over on 79 minutes. However, just when it seemed like it would succumb to the pressure, Aguero completed his hat trick to put his side 4-2 up in the 81st minute. El Kun found space brilliantly in the box and produced his third clinical finish of the night to seemingly put the game out of Mallorca’s reach.

But the Islanders refused to give in, and were handed a lifeline in the 90th minute when Webo scored his second header of the game following a De Guzman set piece.

This sparked the home fans into a frenzy, but Mallorca was ultimately unable to produce an equalizer in the little time that remained, and Atletico held on to finish the season in a thrilling manner.

Despite the loss, Michael Laudrup's men avoided relegation after Deportivo lost at home to Valencia. For Atleti, the victory failed to propel it into automatic Europa League entry after both Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao also won, and the Mattress Men will have to settle for the qualifying round.
