Lazio 2–1 Cagliari: Mauri And Floccari Gift Aquile Record Breaking Victory

The Biancocelesti celebrated their fourth consecutive victory to mark the club’s best ever points haul following eight rounds.

Lazio maintained their grip on the Serie A summit as they edged past Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico.

Sergio Floccari opened the scoring early on when he latched onto a delicate stop by Stefano Mauri and rifled a finish into the bottom corner of the goal. The Biancocelesti were full of confidence and they continued to cause the visitors problems in the opening period.

Mauri doubled his side’s lead shortly after the break by bundling home Floccari’s assist with his chest. The visitors refused to shy away however, and Alessandro Matri reduced the gap when he headed home on the hour mark.

With no further reply from the visitors Lazio celebrated their fourth consecutive victory – a feat not completed for since 2007. The high flying eagles increased their tally at the top to 19 setting a new club record after eight rounds.

The Aquile started extremely brightly and were pushed on by the enthusiasm of the 40,000 spectators inside the Stadio Olimpico.

Floccari went close on 18 minutes when he muscled past Davide Astori and fired over at the near post.

Soon after, Floccari had more joy when he buried the ball into the back of the net following a Hernanes free kick. Cagliari had failed to clear their lines following the initial shot from the Brazilian, and Lazio’s stocky hitman wasted no time in rifling the ball home.

Despite the lead coach Edoardo Reja continued to instruct Mauro Zarate to stick closer to the right wing and get at the visitors from the wide areas. The Aquile tactician refused to settle for a second as he demanded more from his young prodigy.

The Isolani made efforts to push forward but with target man Alessandro Matri extremely isolated up top there were few risks for the Biancocelesti at the back.

Eight minutes after the re-start the Biancocelesti doubled their lead in splendid fashion. This time it was Floccari who provided the assist for Mauri, and the captain bundled the ball home with his chest to send the Curva Nord into frenzy.

Cagliari looked stunned but re-opened the tie five minutes later when Matri headed home following Andrea Cossu’s pinpoint cross. The hitman left Fernando Muslera with little chance between the sticks and did brilliantly to make the most of Lazio’s first error at the back.

As the visitors started to gain confidence, Reja ordered his men to maintain possession in midfield to keep the Rossoblu away from goal. The coach’s direction worked a treat for the Aquile who eventually steadied the ship.

With no further reply it was Lazio who celebrated the win collecting their fourth successive victory in the process. The Biancocelesti maintained the place at the top of the standings moving up to 19 points after eight rounds and setting a new club record. Cagliari remain joint bottom on seven points, but left with their pride intact following a positive display against the high flying Aquile.
