MLS Preview: LA Galaxy - San Jose Earthquakes

MLS Preview: LA Galaxy - San Jose Earthquakes

The California Clasico has added spice, with one team aiming for the Supporters' Shield and the other desperate for playoff points.

Could LA's main man celebrate a new contract in style?

Galaxy star Landon Donovan inked a new deal this week that reportedly could make him the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer next season, and the Galaxy, on a three-game winning streak in all competitions, will hope he can maintain his recent good form as they try and close the gap at the top against the struggling Earthquakes.

The second-place Galaxy (12-9-4) are on 40 points, five back of conference and league-leading Real Salt Lake but with two games in hand. San Jose (9-10-7) is back in eighth, three points out of the playoff spots, but the 'Quakes have more games than most teams at this point and have just eight games left in their campaign.

The teams have already had one memorable match this season. LA went up 2-0, but San Jose thundered back to win 3-2, with Shea Salinas and Alan Gordon netting in extra time to add another chapter to this evolving rivalry

All-time, the California sides are evenly split with 15 wins apiece, and 10 draws.
