Robbie Keane scored two as the Galaxy came from behind to beat the visiting Crew on July 4.A pair of late penalties gave the LA Galaxy a 2-1 win over the Columbus Crew on Thursday.
With 12 minutes remaining in regulation, the Crew struck against the run of play. Up until then, the visitors had put one shot on target (out of three total) and held 42 percent of possession. The chance came from a deep, central free kick, that Federico Higuain arced toward the area. At the top of the box, Bernardo Anor separated from A.J. DeLaGarza to loop a header over the retreating Carlo Cudicini.
Five minutes before time, the Galaxy made their dominance count. In a move that started with Robbie Keane, Marcelo Sarvas slipped the ball through to Jose Villarreal, freshly returned from the U-20 World Cup in Turkey. Andy Gruenebaum dove and took down Villarreal, conceding a penalty. Keane casually stepped up to the spot and sent Gruenebaum the wrong way for the equalizer.
Keane drilled a shot off the crossbeam in the waning minutes as LA piled on the pressure in a breathless end to the match. The Galaxy took 23 shots total.
Another penalty, this one conceded by Anor, provided the winner. Despite minimal contact, Keane went down under a Colin Clark cross. He placed the ball in the exact same spot, but with enough precision that Gruenebaum couldn't reach it.
