The keeper did not have to make a single strenuous save in what turned out to be a very quiet evening for him.
At times showed a lack of communication with his fellow center backs but for the large part was solid throughout the game.
M. De Sciglio
A good performance from the AC Milan man as he probed well on the left, though his deliveries weren't regular enough. Kept Kuyt and Janmaat quiet.
Performed tirelessly on the right side, keeping the threat of Blind to a minimum while also making charges runs into dangerous crossing areas.
Assisted the opening goal with a brilliant ball over the top of the defense. It perhaps made him overconfident as he became a bit sloppy, but defensively he was strong.
Was not posed with an awful lot to do but whatever came his way he dealt with in a confident manner. He was calm in possession, too.
D. De Rossi
A typically combative performance in the heart of the midfield from the Roma man. Scored his side's second with a well-taken penalty.
Distributed possession well in midfield and helped his side get a hold of the ball in the latter stages of the first half.
Made some decent passes in the middle and attempted to get up in support of the strikers. Did not do enough work off the ball, though.
Opened the scoring after just three minutes, rounding Cillessen for a cool finish. He was quick to threaten on the break and linked with Zaza well.
A decent debut from the Sassuolo striker as he won the penalty for his side and combined with Immobile impressively. He missed a great chance to score in the first half, though.
Was not commanding enough as he came off his line but was rounded by Immobile for the opener. He did make some good saves later, though, including one on Zaza.
Had a more reserved evening than he was used to enjoying next to a three-man defense, so offered little in terms of attacking intent. Allowed too many crosses in from his flank.
B. Martins Indi
The center back was shown a red card after just nine minutes for a lazy challenge on Zaza, and De Rossi slotted home the resulting penalty.
S. de Vrij
The Lazio man showed great positional awareness and strength at times but was too coltish up against Zaza whose movement caused him problems.
Pushed on when his team had possession and that enabled Sneijder to move inside. However, at times it left his side exposed and Darmian was always ready to exploit it.
An all-around display from the midfielder as he showed industry and dynamism in a mature performance, but there was little of substance.
N. de Jong
Did his best to break apart the play and was always fully committed in the tackle. He slotted in at the back when Blind ventured forward.
Was forced to operate from the left but when attacking often moved inside. He could not find enough space to create anything for his team, though.
R. van Persie
Did not get an awful lot of service but always looked lively, finding pockets of space to try and link the play. However, he did not offer enough of a goal threat.
Pulled off after just 12 minutes through no fault of his own. He was the man sacrificed following Martins Indi's dismissal.
Featured on the right and worked hard to keep the attacking runs of De Sciglio to a minimum. His touch was often poor and let him down in the final third, though.
