  • And that's that. Honduras comes from behind to take a 2-1 win. USA now bottom of the Hex after one game.
  • 90' + 3'
    Substitution C. Costly G. Welcome
  • 90' + 3'
It goes wide but is out for a corner.
  • 90' + 3'
Maybe one last chance from a set play here. Kljestan lined up over it, probably looking to hang one in to the back post.
  • 90' + 2'
Kljestan with a cross that finds nobody.
  • 90'
Last minute of regulation. USA really needs to get something going. Three minutes of stoppage.
  • 87'
USA pushing, in a way, but not really creating anything. Honduras doing everything it can to kill this game off.
  • 84'
    Substitution J. Bengtson J. Claros
  • 84'
An injury has slowed play. I would guess there's some gamesmanship here being that the Honduran is being carried off.
  • 82'
The balance has certainly swung here. Honduras not with the advantage, trying to take all three points. USA in desperate need of a goal.
  • 79'
    Assist B. García
  • 79'
    Goal J. Bengtson
  • 79'
Both central defenders at fault there. Cameron had a chance to win it, didn't, let the ball get slipped across and Gonzalez failed to track and clear.
  • 79'
What a mistake for the USA. Poor defending and it 2-1 Honduras.
  • 74'
Bradley rolls one at the keeper. Both sides really trying to push it for the next goal, but not much coming off.
  • 71'
Honduras starting to put on the pressure. Garcia stings one wide of the mark.
  • 69'
Costly just used Chandler. Rolled it back through his legs. Nasty move.
  • 67'
    Substitution Jermaine Jones Graham Zusi
  • 67'
    Zusi comes on for Jones.
  • 65'
Whoooo... Dempsey with a crack and it's blocked. Garcia stepped in front. Bradley set him up well though.
  • 64'
Kljestan works into the corner and ends up coughing up a goal kick.
  • 62'
    Good half going right now.
  • 60'
Costly still giving the U.S. all sorts of problems. Another nice run down the left.
  • 59'
    Substitution Eddie Johnson Sacha Kljestan
  • 59'
Kljestan coming in for E. Johnson. Probably Dempsey going right back up front.
  • 58'
    Substitution Daniel Williams Maurice Edu
  • 56'
WAIT! What? It was goal.. but it's been waved off. Honduras does not take the lead. The USA is living dangerously.
  • 55'
USA got away with one there. Cameron just missed on a header, leaving Bengtson with a hit at goal. He fluffed it well over.
  • 55'
    E. Johnson trying to get involved, one too many stepovers.
  • 52'
Really nice break from Honduras. Boniek has the final go and leaves it wide, but there's a flash of energy.
  • 51'
Nice play by Fabian Johnson.. sets Bradley up for a hit.
  • 50'
Similar start to the second half. USA trying to move the ball around the back, and it looks like E. Johnson may have slid up front more, let Dempsey drift back.
  • 46'
    Second half underway.
  • 45 minutes in the book and we're level at 1. Not the best half ever played, but the goals were very nice. Dempsey for the U.S., Garcia for Honduras, and there's 45 minutes still to play.
  • 45'
Maybe one more move forward for either team with just a minute of stoppage time, and E. Johnson tries to play Dempsey who can't get it settled and there's the final whistle.
  • 43'
So the first half has really come on at the end. Started out chippy, but I think we're set up for a great second 45 as this first half draws near its end.
  • 42'
Two really good goals in a short time there. Garcia's was brilliant to pull the home side level.
  • 40'
    Assist Maynor Figueroa
  • 40'
    Goal Juan Carlos García
HONDURAS!!! Back in it. 1-1. What a goal. Garcia hits a fabulous bicycle kick after the ball is swung across the U.S. box a couple of times. Nobody picked him up and wow what a hit.
  • 38'
So a bit of real quality from two veterans has the USA up 1-0. Dempsey's finish was very nice, but the ball from Jones was the real gem there.
  • 36'
    Assist Jermaine Jones
  • 36'
    Goal Clint Dempsey
There it is!! Dempsey puts the USA up 1-0. Great ball from Jones and a great finish from Dempsey. Jones just clipped it over the top, Dempsey's run was well timed and he touched it home first time, full volley. Really lovely goal.
  • 33'
Really nice strike from Martinez. Tried to pick out the far corner and Howard had to punch it away. USA somewhat sloppy out of the back for the third or fourth time.
  • 31'
Somebody better get Espinoza under wraps. He beat his man there, tried to square it across the face and F. Johnson has to come across his man to clear a sure goal.
  • 29'
CLOSE!! E. Johnson gets played in down the left, whips in a cross for Altidore who touches it just over the bar. Really nice move that started with Bradley and Dempsey doing work in the middle.
  • 27'
Good move from Honduras. Bengtson has it poked away.
  • 25'
Corner for the USA, Dempsey lays it to Bradley, who has his shot blocked out for another corner.
  • 23'
Nice hit from Espinoza who turns and tries to make something out of nothing. Best look of the night.
  • 21'
Better for the USA for a minute there, calmly knocking it around the back and now Bradley breaks forward and tries to play Dempsey, who lays it off for Altidore before it's lost.
  • 20'
There's a half-decent move from the USA. Chandler lofts a cross in. E. Johnson is in at the back post but can't reach it. Altidore tries to track it down but the danger is gone.
  • 19'
Still a very choppy match. Not really any great chances to speak of, and not too much good play if we're being honest.
  • 15'
Really slow pace to this match. Costly has arguably been the best player on the pitch. USA not pushing the pace at all right now and the Hondurans are just taking all the space being given to them.
  • 13'
13 minutes in and the U.S. finally managed to get the ball on the ground and knock it around a bit.
  • 11'
Foul called against the U.S. Cameron trying to step in and make a play on the ball, gives it away near midfield.
  • 9'
Really nice play from Costly. Honduras looking the better side early. E. Johnson had to make the run back to make the stop.
  • 7'
No foul called as Dempsey tries to slip his way through. Looks pretty clear, and Honduras nearly hits on the break.
  • 6'
Dempsey hits a shot from about 40. Rolls it to the keeper. Maybe just trying to keep people honest. USA hasn't had much of the ball early on.
  • 3'
Honduras gets off the first shot of the day. A low cross is blocked out and hammered back in, but well high of the mark.
  • 2'
Jones makes sure to give it right back with a foul of his own.
  • 1'
Early foul called against Honduras, just a flat shove on E. Johnson. Probably see plenty of those today.
  • 1'
    Here we go!!
  • Also, with regard to Bocanegra being left out: He's widely credited with being the organizer on the U.S. team. Very good at holding his team together and keeping people in the right places. Not sure who is ready to take on that role. Cameron has certainly shown that ability, as has Gonzalez, but it's usually something done by more veteran players at the back. That could leave a lot on Tim Howard to call things out, and in a loud stadium that can be difficult.
  • Also of note: Altidore being back up front will have his hands full with a couple of very physical defenders in Bernardez and Figueroa, but if Dempsey does what he normally does and drifts into the pockets, the way this Honduran team looks on paper he should be able to find some joy. Of course, the games aren't played on paper, and normally the Tottenham forward has at least one guy tracking him at all times when he plays matches in CONCACAF.
  • There's plenty of reason for interest in this match aside from it being the opening of the Hex. The Cameron/Gonzalez pairing will be facing some stiff competition from Bengtson and Costly, and Honduras' midfield is really set up well to attack the U.S. Meanwhile, the USA has gone with three defensive midfielders, though it's likely that at least one of them will drift to a win some, it'll still be worth watching how they choose to deal with Espinoza and company in the middle of the park.
  • Honduras lineup: Valladares; Peralta, Bernárdez, Figueroa, García; Boniek, Espinoza, Garrido, Martínez; Bengtson, Costly. Plenty of familiar names in there as well.
  • Still just over 30 minutes from the opening kick of the USA's final round of World Cup qualifying. Jurgen Klinsmann has rolled the dice a bit with his starting lineup, picking Omar Gonzalez and Cameron at the back with Johnson and Chandler. Jozy Altidore is back in up front despite rumors that he would be left on the bench. Eddie Johnson will be on the left with Dempsey also slotted in up top. Bradley, Jones and Williams are in the midfield, leaving some questions as to exactly how this team will be asked to play.
