Manu netted thrice, one of them an own goal, while Urko Vera scored a last minute equaliser for the visitors…
Athletic Bilbao’s aspirations to qualify for next season’s Europa League suffered a blow on Monday evening as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Getafe in the Spanish Primera Division.
In a second-half goal-fest, Manu opened the scoring for the hosts on 58 minutes but scored an own goal to make it 1-1 just minutes later.
The 27-year-old restored Getafe’s lead with just ten minutes of normal time remaining only for Athletic to earn a draw as Urko Vera found the target in injury time.
Getafe started the match the brighter of the two sides as Javier Arizmendi tried his luck twice in the first five minutes but in vain, and then Juan Albin had his shot saved.
Both Getafe and Athletic had half-chances thereafter but the hosts continued to make most of the home advantage, with Ivan Marcano and Pedro Rios coming close.
Athletic commenced the second-half on the front foot with Markel Susaeta and Fernando Llorente seeing their attempts saved.
However, two minutes before the hour-mark Manu put Getafe in the lead with a right-footed shot from close range after he was released by Arizmendi.
But it was Manu who equalised for Athletic as he scored an own goal on 69 minutes.
Interestingly, Manu once again found his way on to the scoresheet when passed the ball by Arizmendi, he found the target with a shot from outside the box.
However, four minutes into injury time Athletic restored parity as Urko Vera headed home a David Lopez delivery from close range as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.Follow Goal.com on to get the latest soccer news directly.
