The Old Lady kept their scudetto hopes alive with an important away win at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.Juventus kept in the hunt at the top of the Serie A standings after seeing off a disappointing Genoa outfit in their own back yard.
The Bianconeri got off to a flying start when Claudio Marchisio’s volleyed effort took a deflection inside the box to finish on the wrong side of Eduardo between the sticks. Milos Krasic doubled the lead shortly after when he left Domenico Criscito for dead on the right and rifled a wonderful effort in off the back post.
After the break the Rossoblu fought back but were unable to find any joy in front of goal. The Old Lady through on some added muscle in midfield and had little problem in secure the points despite a superior possession from the home side.
The win lifted Juventus to within six points of league leaders Milan and keeps them in the hunt at the crucial stage in the run up to the winter break. Davide Ballardini was handed served his first defeat on the Genoa bench and will have to go back to the drawing board after seeing his side concede far too much at the back during the opening stages.
The game started brightly with the Grifoni immediately pushing forward showing their intention to search for the victory from the off.
It was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 17 minutes however when Marchisio’s speculative effort took a double deflection first of Dainelli and then Eduardo to finish in the back of the net.
The Bianconeri doubled their lead in spectacular fashion just five minutes later when Krasic rounded Criscito into the box and then rifled a drive towards the inside of the far post.
Genoa looked to fight back and were desperately unfortunate not to bridge the gap when Criscito’s volleyed effort came crashing off the bar following a poorly cleared corner.
After the break Ballardini made some changes in the hope of reducing the gap between the sides. It was Juventus who came out the more threatening however and Alberto Aquilani almost increased his side’s lead when he sprayed just past the post on 50 minutes.
The Grifoni continued to pour forward and Luigi Del Neri’s side started to dig in as they soaked up the inevitable fight back. Despite coming an increased spell of pressure Juventus remained well organised and threatened to strech their lead on the counter attack.
Vincenzo Iaquinta had a golden chance to put the tie to bed on 63 minutes when he found himself one on one with the goalkeeper. Eduardo however had other ideas and the Portuguese glovesman kept his wits about him by diving at the feet of the hitman and robbing him of the ball inside the box.
The Old Lady celebrated an important victory which lifted them back above Roma and six points off leaders Milan. The home side fell to their first defeat under new coach Ballardini and will rue the missed chances following their poor start to the game.
