Serie A Preview: Genoa – Bologna

Serie A Preview: Genoa – Bologna

The Grifone will hope for a turnaround of results under a new coach.

New Coach, New Start

Gian Piero Gasperini paid the price for Genoa’s disappointing start to the season and was given the marching orders by club president Enrico Preziosi. The 1-0 defeat to fellow Champions League-chasers Palermo at the weekend that pushed the Grifone to just three points above the relegation zone proved to be the final straw that broke his back.

Davide Ballardini is the new tactician of the ambitious Serie A club and he will have his work cut out. The 46-year-old does have loads of experience in the Italian top flight, having coached Palermo, Cagliari and Lazio, but he knows that realizing Genoa’s dreams at a stage when they are struggling for a good run of results will be tough.

"I thank Genoa president Enrico Preziosi for giving me the opportunity to coach the oldest club in Italy,'' said the tactician. "This is where football began in Italy and I'm delighted to be here.

"My aim is to make sure Genoa are competitive and I believe we have the players to achieve this.

"Gasperini has done a great job at the club and to replace him is a great challenge for me.''

Rising Up

Bologna defeated fellow relegation candidates Lecce 2-0 at the weekend to muster their first win in six matches. The result means that the Rossoblu are now level on points with Genoa on 11 points from 10 matches.

However, Alberto Malesani’s side are just three points above the relegation zone and cannot afford to drop points. Every point is important in a league where competition is intense and immensely fierce.

Bologna are handicapped by their poor away record, though, as they have yet to win on the road and have conceded a whopping 12 goals in five away games.
