Couldn’t really be held accountable on either goal as first he was beaten by a screamer and then left short-handed by his team-mates on the counter-attack.
A poor display by the full-back as he was constantly left wanting by Palermo’s attacking style down the channels.
L. De Silvestri
Started with purpose, but seemed to be caught between a rock and a hard place when attacked as Palermo often used the channels to go effect. Picked up a knock and was replaced before half-time by Comotto.
Not displaying the form that made him a Nazionale contender once upon a time. Found it hard to come to grips with the aerial presence of Pinilla or the trickery of Ilicic and Pastore.
Struggled to come to terms with Palermo’s counter-attacks and was missing at vital times as the Viola tried to keep their heads about water.
Made some progress down the left, but his lack of faith in his left foot ultimately cost him the chance to create a truly positive effect on the proceedings.
Too often misplaced passes at a time when his side needed a cool head. Improved in the second half as the Viola came back into it but ultimately unable to have a positive influence.
Could have done better when getting beyond Nocerino and firing within Sirigu’s reach at the near post. He was a constant danger as he continually tried to get in behind Balzaretti.
Where was his defensive quality? Where was his captain’s drive? Where was his passing ability? Surely he won’t make the Italy squad on this kind of form. Abject performance as he was overrun by Palermo’s midfield and then somehow let Bovo break on him before bringing the defender down for a certain red card.
May well have scored a goal to bring his side back into it, but he seems to be less involved in games than ever for the most part. Has some way to go before he returns to the form of old.
Exerts a tremendous amount of influence in this new Fiorentina but will ultimately remember this game for Sirigu having denied him from the spot, and even more impressively from his turn and shot moments later.
Saved Ljacic’s penalty and then produced two more fantastic saves, most notably an outstanding effort to keep out the Serb once more.
Continues to improve defensively, and was very harshly penalised for chesting the all out for a corner. Deserved to be on the winning side, and will have felt that Sirigu’s penalty save was justice done.
Looked assured in the first half but was thrown out of his stride by the introduction of Santana, who beat him more often than Delio Rossi will have liked.
Culpable for Fiorentina’s lifeline goal, despite having looked more solid than of late during the first half. Last season increasingly appears to have been a one-off.
Getting there as a cultured centre-half, though he still seems to be settling in. Dealt with most issues well, but still looks unsure when pulled wide.
Always a danger, and coolly finished off after a great one-two with Nocerino on the break to send the Rosanero 2-0 up. Remained the main threat in the second half as the Viola had to remain vigilant of Palermo’s breaks.
Beginning to show more composure in his holding midfield role, and making Palermo look a tighter unit as a result. Went through a rocky spell in the second, but bedding in well now.
Did an excellent job on the right of midfield in the first half, covering well for the marauding Cassani, but seemed to lose his will to battle in the second.
Allowed Cerci a sight of goal early on, but on the ball he was as cool and calm as ever and chalked up an assist for Pastore’s goal before the break. Continues to provide assuredness on the left of Palermo’s midfield.
Unlucky when his left foot effort came back off the underside of the bar early on, but didn’t have to wait long before striking an unstoppable long range effort past Frey. Thereafter remained a constant danger and forced a good late save out of the Frenchman.
Provides a great focal point with his ability both in the air and on the ground and was just as big a part of the victory as were Ilicic and Pastore.
- 84 A. Boruc
- 16 Felipe
Replaced De Silvestri before the break but had few answers to stem the tide as Palermo flowed forward at ease on the counter.
Replaced Cerci after Montolivo’s sending-off to add further midfield strength.
- 15 C. Zanetti
Had an immediate impact after replacing Marchionni by getting to the bye-line and teeing up Gilardino for Fiorentina’s lifeline goal. Could also have had further assists had there being more will to gamble from his team-mates.
- 9 K. Babacar
- 99 F. Benussi
- 25 K. Glik
- 36 M. Darmian
- 29 S. García
Late replacement for Ilicic.
Replaced Pinilla up top but should have done better on a four-on-one break as Palermo failed to make the most of their superior numbers late on.
Replaced Pastore in the dying moments.
