FC Edmonton 2-1 Montreal Impact: Eddies stun Impact with late winner

Chris Austin-USA TODAY Sports

The Eddies struck late to grab a narrow victory in the first leg of the Canadian Championship semifinal versus the Impact.

Michael Nonni scored a late winner to propel FC Edmonton to a stunning 2-1 victory over the Montreal Impact in the Canadian Championship semifinal Wednesday.

Tomi Amoebi scored Edmonton's first goal after Jack McInerney had opened the scoring in the match, which was the first leg of a two-game series.

A disjointed first half saw the home side get the better of the play, as the teams felt each other out. Edmonton's Hanson Boakai was a thorn in Montreal's side from the outset, and he found himself with a couple of chances but nothing too threatening.

Outside of the teenager's play and a few Impact forays, there was very little to speak about after the first 45 minutes.

Montreal struck first in the 56th minute, after Patrice Bernier floated in a free kick from 30 yards that found McInerney at the back post. The Impact striker calmly nodded home, and Montreal had a lead for all of four minutes.

In the 60th minute, Boakai played provider as the youngster gathered the ball and made a wonderful no-look through ball to Amoebi, who slotted home the equalizer.

The match looked to be headed for a draw, but Nonni grabbed the winner for Edmonton after Karl Ouimette shanked a clearance attempt that allowed the Eddies player to round Montreal 'keeper Evan Bush and easily place the ball into the open net.

The teams will reconvene next Wednesday for the second leg at Stade Saputo in Montreal.
