Premier League Preview: Everton - Newcastle United

Fighting Spirit

Mikel Arteta's deflected equaliser for Everton in the dramatic closing stages of the 3-3 draw with Manchester United gained more than just a point for the Goodison side last weekend.

The rousing draw illustrated Everton's desire and endeavour to shake off the notion that 'Everton always start badly' after a number of seasons in which poor form early on has cost David Moyes' side come the business end of the season.

The former Preston manager now has a squad largely exempt from injury and will be aiming to blast away any early season cobwebs with a resounding victory over newly promoted Newcastle United on Saturday.

A win could be needed to ease Moyes' fiery temper after a recent outburst, following the referee, Martin Atkinson's decision to call time on the game against United whilst Everton were on the attack and looking for a dramatic winner.

The Everton manager stormed onto the pitch as the Atkinson's whistle was blown and proceeded to berate the officials. The reaction has lead to an £8000 fine from the Football Association after accepting a misconduct charge. Moyes' assistant Steve Round is also due to face disciplinary action from the FA after reacting in a similar manner.

Inconsistent Magpies

Chris Hughton's recently promoted side have experienced an odd series of results on their return to the Premier League .

After an emphatic 6-0 win over an experienced Aston Villa side, the Magpies have stuttered with an uninspiring draw at Wolves followed by a crushing defeat to the supposed Premier League whipping boys, Blackpool.

The 2-0 defeat to the Seasiders ruined Newcastle's excellent record at St James' Park and ensured that Ian Holloway's men continue to confound the critics in their lofty perch of the European qualification spots.

With many calling for the rangy striker Andy Carroll to be included in Fabio Capello's future England squad, Hughton will be aiming to use Carroll's aerial prowess combined with the creativity provided by Kevin Nolan and the reinvigorated Joey Barton to damage the Everton backline.

Newcaslte's aim for the season will be Premier League survival, whilst Everton will be seeking to build on last year's respectable points total and upset the cartel in the upper echelons of the Premier League.
