Espanyol 2-3 Sevilla: Europa League place secured for Manzano's men after last day victory

Negredo brace helps Sevilla to fifth place in la Liga after a hard-fought victory at the Cornella-El Prat.

Sevilla finished the season in fifth place and confirmed a Europa league spot after a 3-2 final day victory over Espanyol, who completed their best campaign since the 2004-05 term.

Alvaro Negredo put los Rojiblancos in the lead with Frederic Kanoute doubling the lead in first half injury time to all but ensure fifth spot for Sevilla.

Pablo Osvaldo looked to start a second-half revival with a well-taken goal only for Negredo to register his 20th goal of the season to diminish any chance of an Espanyol recovery.

Verdu dragged his side back into the tie once more with a replica of Espanyol’s first goal, but it still wasn’t enough to deny the Andalucians victory.

It took Gregorio Manzano’s side all of three minutes before they again took the lead.  Alejandro Alfaro provided the impetus into the attack before laying the ball off for Negredo to turn home his 19th goal of the season.

Espanyol looked for an immediate response through Osvaldo, who combined well with Luis Garcia only to be denied by Javi Varas.

Luck continued to abandon Espanyol when Alvaro Vasquez managed to sky an effort from inside the area when it would have been easier to score.

With the half reaching an end, Sevilla punished the hosts when Romaric rolled the ball across for Kanoute, who made no mistake in doubling his team's lead from six yards out.

Espanyol forced its way into the game early in the second-half when Osvaldo escaped his marker before expertly volleying Joan Verdu’s cross beyond Vargas, engineering an all-out-attack approach from the home side.

Sevilla managed to break away with devastating effect as Alvaro Negredo scored his 20th goal of the season with a fine finish when one-on-one with Christian Alvarez, leaving the ‘keeper with no chance.

The game was guaranteed a frantic last quarter of an hour when Verdu volleyed home in similar circumstances to Osvaldo’s goal, but with the roles reversed.

Espanyol played out the remainder of the game camped in Sevilla’s half, but the club was unable to force that equalizer. The result saw Mauricio Pochettino's side lose for only the sixth time at home all season.

The victory, however, ensured Sevilla ended the season in fifth as the club booked an automatic berth in the Europa League.
