D.C. United, with five points from 12 games, has the worst record in MLS, which was compounded by a home loss to Portland. After suggesting he wanted to leave the club, Carlos Ruiz made his first D.C. United start against the Portland Timbers. But the Guatemalan striker couldn't make the difference for bottom-of-the-league United, which lost 2-0 to the Timbers in RFK Stadium.
In the 20th minute, the Timbers worked the ball across the field from a throw-in. Frédéric Piquionne fed Rodney Wallace, who wound up and blasted the ball into the top of the goal.
Ten minutes into the second half, Portland doubled the lead. Darlington Nagbe settled a midfield ball by heading to Ryan Johnson, who scooped it over the D.C. back line. Nagbe five-holed Bill Hamid.
In seven previous appearances, all as a substitute, Ruiz had played 100 minutes total for D.C. He lasted 71 minutes into Saturday's loss.
