FC Dallas and the San Jose Earthquakes played to a 2-2 tie in a match with three goals in the first 19 minutes and three red cards in the final nine. There were goals aplenty early and a trio of red cards late, but no victor emerged Saturday as FC Dallas and the San Jose Earthquakes played to a wild 2-2 draw.
Eight minutes in, San Jose striker Alan Gordon's third goal of the season set off the first-half fireworks. Dispossessing right back Kellyn Acosta, Cordell Cato made a streaking run down the left flank to the end line before hitting a centering feed that Gordon hammered home from the top of the penalty area.
Steven Beitashour doubled the visitors' advantage in the 16th minute. Running onto a chip into the box from Rafael Baca, the right back hit a deft volley past charging goalkeeper Raul Fernandez. It was the second tally of Beitashour's career, and his first since 2010.
But Blas Perez negated that strike just three minutes later. Je-Vaughn Watson headed a Michel cross into the path of Perez, who beat Jon Busch to the ball and redirected it in for his 10th goal of 2013.
Dallas drew even in the 72nd minute. Connecting onto a lofted ball into the box, Perez theatrically fell to the turf despite minimal contact from Victor Bernardez. But referee Baldomero Toledo was convinced, and Michel tucked the penalty kick into the side netting for his second goal of the year.
In the dying stages, the match turned ugly. San Jose substitute Justin Morrow saw red for a reckless slide tackle on Dallas' Ramon Nunez in the 81st minute. Four minutes later, Bernardez and Dallas substitute Kenny Cooper were tossed after a midfield scuffle.
Dallas (9-7-10) moved into a tie for the fifth and final playoff position in the Western Conference with the point. San Jose (9-10-7) is three points back.
