Kenny Cooper's goal against his former team wasn't enough to pull New York back from two goals down.
Zach Loyd opened the scoring for FC Dallas 11 minutes into the match after a scramble in the box saw the ball pop out to him in a good position.
In the 61st minute Blas Perez got involved and set the table for Dallas to double its lead. The Panamanian broke forward down the right and cut inside, allowing Ricardo Villar to make an overlapping run that Perez picked out well. Villar was in alone and made no mistake, chipping past Ryan Meara.
Perez himself had two glorious chances to get on the scoresheet and should have put Dallas up three goals in the 73rd minute when Carlos Rodriguez broke in on goal and cut it back to the big forward. Despite being in great position to put the game to bed, Meara came up with the save.
Keeny Cooper pulled one back for New York in the 78th, lobbing a shot over Kevin Hartman after being played in by Thierry Henry, and it looked as though the miss from Perez might come back to haunt the home side.
Cooper stung another shot moments later that had to be palmed over the bar, and New York pumped a number of crosses into the box only for Kevin Hartman to be on hand to claim them and deal with the danger.
