The Crew moved to within a point of a playoff spot with one more game played than Philadelphia, while FCD is now five points adrift of a postseason spot. The Columbus Crew kept their playoff hopes alive with a 4-2 away victory at FC Dallas on Sunday night.
Columbus got off to a two-goal lead within the game's first 17 minutes. Federico Higuaín scored the opener in strange fashion when he rounded Raul Fernandez on a breakaway and send a shot on goal that George John cleared off the line, but the ball ricocheted off the falling Higuain and into the back of the net. Jairo Arrieta then doubled the lead after a Dominic Oduro cross found him alone in the box.
Just minutes later, Blas Perez gave the home side hope when he finished low and to the far post after a quickly-taken free kick caught the Columbus defense napping. Just before half though, Oduro again made it a two-goal lead when he finished off a breakaway after easily touching by Matt Hedges to set himself away.
The Hoops again halved the defect 10 minutes after the break when Zach Loyd found Mauro Diaz, who sliced through the Columbus defense and bundled past Matt Lampson before controlling and prodding home from a yard out.
That would be as close as FCD would get however, and Columbus sealed the result with just minutes to play when Higuain clipped a ball over the top that Bernardo Anor controlled and slammed home on the half volley.
