Live Commentary

  • Heartbreaking for George John and FC Dallas. For all their possession, they simply ran out of ideas to break down a fantastic Colorado defense. For Colorado it was a scrappy performance, never-say-die. There was very little for John to do on the goal, he could barely get out of the way and credit has to be given to Kandju and Casey for setting up.
  • Well, it may not have been the most exciting of games until the last 15 minutes, but a great finish in Toronto. That's all from me, Nick Rosano, thanks for following along!
  • 120' + 4'
AND THAT'S IT! COLORADO WINS THE CUP!
  • 120' + 3'
CLEARED OFF THE LINE! Cunningham gets past Pickens but Drew Moor clears off the line. INCREDIBLE STUFF.
  • 120' + 3'
It's madness now! Avila goes down, though minimal contact and was never going to be a penalty, Cunningham shanks a shot, but is offside!
  • 120' + 1'
FC Dallas are just piling it on! Pickens makes an amazing save low on John to his right despite being screened by a defender. Seconds later, McCarty's looping flick on just over the bar. It's all or nothing now!
  • 120'
Three minutes added on, correct amount given Kandji's injury.
  • 118'
Ferreira gets a shot off, but Pickens falls on it. Colorado have Casey trying to relieve pressure occasionally up top, but it's really been all Dallas in terms of possession.
  • 115'
Great ball in from Ferreira to set up an onrushing Ihemelu, but the defender absolutely skies it. Golden chance to equalize squandered by FCD.
  • 112'
Kandji has gone to the locker room and will definitely not be returning. Colorado, having used all their substitutes will have to finish the game with ten men.
  • 109'
Kandji's injury looked very legitimate, but Dallas are incensed. Ihemelu shoves Kandji as he gets up to limp off the field.
  • 107'
    Own Goal George John
  • 107'
OWN GOAL! Kandji blows by Benitez, toe pokes it across the box, but the ball deflects off the thigh of George John and past a stranded Hartman. Kandji collided with Ihemelu though and is has been down on the field for two minutes.
  • 106'
Second period of extra time is underway.
  • 105'
    SubstitutionMarvin Chávez Eric Avila
  • 105'
That's the end of the first period of extra time. The two teams will quickly switch sides and play 15 more minutes. If they remain tied, time for penalties.
  • 105'
Eric Avila, the hero against Real Salt Lake, replaces Chavez, who had a great game. Last substitution for either team.
  • 99'
Neither team wants to make the first mistake and concede, both playing very conservative in the opening ten minutes of the first period of extra time.
  • 98'
    SubstitutionOmar Cummings Macoumba Kandji
  • 98'
Mac Kandji enters the match for Omar Cummings. Normally a surprising choice to remove Omar, but he hasn't been his dangerous self tonight.
  • 91'
    SubstitutionAnthony Wallace Julien Baudet
  • 91'
First half of extra time is under way! Two 15 minute periods of extra time, followed by a penalty shootout if the teams are still tied. No golden, silver or platinum goals.
  • 90' + 2'
Baldomero Toledo blows for full time before the Rapids can take a corner. Rapids players incensed with that decision, but it was nearly 30 seconds after the allotted two minutes, which in and of itself seemed short considering the number of stoppages in the second half. Nonetheless, to extra time we go.
  • 90' + 1'
Thompson involved right away in a scuffle with Hernandez, the refs break it up, but no cards shown.
  • 90'
Jamie Smith leaves as Wells Thompson replaces him. Great night for the Scotsman, who did extremely well to set up Colorado's goal.
  • 90'
    SubstitutionJamie Smith W. Thompson
  • 90'
Two minutes of time added on.
  • 85'
Dallas is really ramping up the pressure with a series of chances, but Colorado is throwing bodies in front of the shots to prevent any chance at a goal. Dallas has been playing a high pressing game all half long, but cannot find a way through.
  • 84'
Toledo finally shows the cards again, to Benitez and Casey for a clash near the fourth official.
  • 83'
    Yellow Card Jair Benítez
  • 83'
    Yellow Card Conor Casey
  • 83'
Fantastic run from Zach Loyd, to draw the Dallas defense to the byline, but his cutback missed everyone and was easily cleared.
  • 80'
Lots of audible screaming as the physical play continues as you get the sense that Baldomero Toledo doesn't quite have control of this game. Still only two cards shown, none in the last 30 minutes.
  • 72'
Continued pressure from FC Dallas as Larentowicz blocks a laser from McCarty.
  • 71'
The game has taken an increasingly physical tone, on the Colorado side of things. Dallas has been the better side since Casey's goal and nearly gets a fortuitous goal after a corner deflects, but Matt Pickens claims it.
  • 64'
    SubstitutionBrek Shea Jeff Cunningham
  • 64'
Second sub of the game for Dallas. Brek Shea, who has been wholly ineffective, leaves the game as Jeff Cunningham enters.
  • 62'
Jeff Larentowicz blasts a free kick in from the right but fantastic save from Hartman! Looks like Hartman saw in late, but excellent save, that ball was swerving and headed straight for the back of the net.
  • 60'
Casey clatters into Hernandez. It seems part of the Rapids game plan is to make life especially hard for Daniel Hernandez, who has been dealing with knee injuries throughout the playoffs.
  • 59'
This goal should really open up the game, as it came just as Dallas were starting to clamp down.
  • 57'
    Goal Conor Casey
  • 56'
GOAL COLORADO! Jamie Smith blows by Loyd before crossing it in. Casey, Benitez and Hartman all came together, but Casey managed to poke it home before the Dallas players could do anything about it. Game on.
  • 51'
    Yellow Card Jamie Smith
  • 51'
Jamie Smith with a booking for a dangerous challenge from behind on McCarty.
  • 46'
And for those of your just tuning in, apologies if the site is saying Colorado is up 1-0, it is Dallas who is winning 1-0.
  • 46'
    Second half is underway!
  • Nothing groundbreaking from Garber, except for 10 teams making the playoffs next year, which was the rumor circulating before the game. Fourth and fifth seeds will have a play-in game.
  • MLS Comissioner Don Garber on shortly to discuss possible changes to the MLS playoff format. Rumor has it that he will announce the expansion of the playoffs to ten teams and discuss a possible move to a fall-spring schedule in line with European leagues.
  • That's halftime. FC Dallas up 1-0 thanks to a David Ferreira goal, though Marvin Chavez has probably been the best for Dallas so far. Rapids have not won in 50 regular season games after going in to halftime behind, so they have a big task ahead of them.
  • 45' + 2'
Casey goes up and clashes heads with George John. Both of them will be feeling that in the morning.
  • 44'
Chavez tests Pickens from a long way out with a daisy-cutter that skips quickly off the grass, forcing Matt Pickens into an ecellent save.
  • 41'
    Yellow Card Anthony Wallace
First yellow card of the match goes to Anthony Wallace for a hard challenge from behind on Marvin Chavez.
  • 37'
Near instant reply from Cummings as he flashes the shot across the face of goal.
  • 35'
    Goal D. Ferreira
GOAL DALLAS! Fantastic cross field ball from Benitez finds Marvin Chavez on the left, and the Honduras puts the ball right onto the boot of a totally unmarked David Ferreira. Fantastic buildup from Dallas, but atrocious defending from the Rapids.
  • 33'
    SubstitutionJackson Zach Loyd
...and there's the substitution, Jackson off, Zach Loyd on.
  • 33'
Jackson has really been struggling for the last five minutes and it looks like he will have to come off soon.
  • 27'
Casey and Benitez tussle in the box and Casey sprung up with the ball only to get caught by Benitez. Big no-call from Baldomero Toledo.
  • 19'
Shea goes down in the box after Mullan catches the bottom of his foot while trying to make a clearance. Not too many appeals on the field, but Schellas Hyndman seems to think that should have been a penalty.
  • 17'
Uncharacteristically poor pass from Ferreira as he underhits it to Marvell Wynne, likely costing Brek Shea a chance to break free on goal.
  • 15'
Colorado again with some pressure and Smith is able to put in across, but George John clears easily.
  • 11'
Dallas now with a short spell of pressure, but typically astute defending from Colorado as the Hoops fail to test Matt Pickens.
  • 10'
Ten minutes and Colorado are now looking better-settled than Dallas. David Ferreira has not seen much of the ball so far.
  • 8'
Smart ball in from Mastroeni puts Mullan through, but had to get his shot off quick and fired right into the waiting arms of Hartman.
  • 5'
Neither team has really settled in and Harris' header has been the only clear chance for either team. Free kick on the left side for Colorado, but no one can reach it.
  • 1'
We're underway and already Dallas has a chance as Benitez swings in a ball to Atiba Harris, but his diving header is wide.
  • Both teams have plenty of attacking talent, but the players behind will be crucial in deciding the outcome of the map. Kevin Hartman is as hot as ever for Dallas, while Colorado defended very well against San Jose in the Eastern Conference final.
  • Jamie Smith makes a return to the starting lineup for Colorado after missing out on previous playoff starts with a hamstring strain. All in all, though, no surprises from either coach.
  • Schellas Hyndman goes with an unchanged lineup, and why not? It's the same one that manhandled Los Angeles 3-0 last week at the Home Depot Center.
  • Welcome to Goal.com's live commentary of the MLS Cup final! Nick Rosano here, and I'll be with you through the final whistle.
