Columbus Crew 0-0 FC Dallas: Teams play to scoreless draw in rescheduled match

Columbus Crew 0-0 FC Dallas: Teams play to scoreless draw in rescheduled match

Columbus Crew

The rescheduled match was worn down by the conditions, and perhaps rust from a league break.

The Columbus Crew and FC Dallas played to a scoreless draw in the teams' return to Major League Soccer play after a two-week break for the World Cup.

The match was set to be played Saturday but had to be rescheduled after a storm blew through the area and a man in the Crew Stadium parking lot was hospitalized after sustaining a lightning strike. The man, 54-year-old Columbus firefighter Stu Tudor is listed in critical condition at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Despite the World Cup break, the hosts were still without Giancarlo Gonzalez and Waylon Francis, who will suit up for Costa Rica when it faces Greece in the round of 16.

The absences, delays and afternoon heat showed on the match, which was characterized more by the chances missed than any taken.

In the first half, Dallas' Andres Escobar set up fellow forward Tesho Akindele. He should've scored, but the young Canadian couldn't continue his recent positive run of form, missing a vacant net. Though his chance looked sure to be the most egregious miss of the match, Crew forward Jairo Arrieta missed the goal entirely with five minutes left when it looked as though the Dallas defense and goalkeeper Chris Seitz were beaten.

Both teams return to action Friday for Fourth of July matches.
