The defending champs scored in the first five minutes before surrendering four goals to the Crew on Sunday night.

The Colorado Rapids gave Columbus Crew the gift of goals packaged in turnovers, as the defending champions are easily defeated 4-1.

Andres Medoza had a brace, while Eddie Gaven and Heinemann added goals for Columbus. Conor Casey scored Colorado's only goal.

It only took five minutes for the Rapids to get on the scoreboard. Jamie Smith, off a set piece, delivered it to Casey, who beautifully placed the ball in the back of the net. To Rapids fans everywhere, it gave hope of bringing home three points.

The Crew, however,  had different plans.

Columbus was up for the challenge of scoring goals in its own home. In the 12th minute, Rapids defender Scott Palguta gave a perfect pass to Gaven, who easily scored the tying goal.

In the 18th minute, the Rapids had another turnover, resulting in Andres Mendoza putting the ball in the goal. At 2-1, Colorado was preparing for a comeback, when Casey went in late on a ball, connecting his foot with the face Crew keeper Will Hesmer.

The referee didn’t hesitate to reach in his back pocket for the bright colored red card. As Casey silently left the pitch, hope of the Rapids winning went with him.

The Crew’s night was not over.

Courtesy of the Rapids third turnover, Mendoza was alone with the ball, and once again scored for the Crew, giving the hosting team a 3-1 lead.  Still not done, Columbus scored the final goal of the night, when Heinemann shot through Matt Pickens, making the final 4-1.

As subs were being made, salt was being poured on the Rapids wounds.  In a game so painful to watch that even the ref wanted the game over, the final whistle is blown in the 89th minute.
