Columbus Crew 2-1 Chicago Fire: Hosts hold onto early lead

Eddie Gaven opened the scoring and assisted the winner against the Fire to extend the Crew's unbeaten run to five matches.

The Columbus Crew followed up an impressive midweek win over Seattle Sounders FC with a smart 2-1 victory at home against the Chicago Fire.

Columbus took the lead in the ninth minute and never surrendered it. Eddie Gaven didn't seem to be in a very dangerous spot when he picked up the ball at the edge of the box, but he thwacked a low drive that surprised Sean Johnson at the near post.

Emilio Renteria doubled the lead just before halftime. Gaven slid a short cross into the box, where Renteria slowly but smoothly spun around Austin Berry's lunge and then slotted home. He celebrated with an elaborate bow and arrow pantomime.

The rookie defender went some way towards making up for his inexperienced defending by scoring the consolation. A corner was pumped back into the box and Berry rose above several jostling players to head it in.

In all, Chicago took 10 corner kicks to the Crew's four, but Andy Gruenebaum pulled off six saves to preserve the win.
