A Gabriel Torres brace and Deshorn Brown tally strengthened Colorado's playoff positioning while ending the Whitecaps' postseason hopes.
Two strikes from Gabriel Torres and one from Deshorn Brown led the Rapids to a 3-2 victory Saturday over the Whitecaps, who got goals from Kekuta Manneh and Camilo.
Colorado (14-10-9) opened up a four-point lead on the San Jose Earthquakes for the final Western Conference playoff spot, while Vancouver (12-12-9) was mathematically eliminated with one game remaining — next week's rematch with the Rapids.
Manneh opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Collecting a pass from Daigo Kobayashi some 25 yards from goal, the 18-year-old turned and curled his effort into the top-right corner. It was Manneh's sixth goal of the season, and fourth in two games.
Colorado drew even four minutes before halftime. After Carlyle Mitchell pulled down Drew Moor in the box, Torres placed his penalty into the side netting. And the Rapids went ahead in the 51st minute when Brown ran onto a Clint Irwin goal kick and chipped over the charging David Ousted.
Vancouver made it 2-2 in the 75th minute when Shane O'Neill tripped up Jordan Harvey in the box and Camilo converted the penalty for his 19th goal of the season.
But the Rapids got the winner in spectacular fashion just two minutes later. Bringing down Brown's switch, Torres cut in from the right flank and hit a bending shot to the far post that struck the bottom of the crossbar on its way in.
