The visitors struck right after halftime to maintain their perfect start to 2012.
The first half was a drab affair, with Chivas USA looking to keep men behind the ball to stifle Sporting KC's potent offense. Ryan Smith looked most threatening for the home side, while C.J. Sapong had a penalty shout waived off after Rauwshan McKenzie pulled him down in the box.
Sporting Kansas City broke the deadlock right after the restart. Graham Zusi's long-distance strike was fantastically tipped onto the bar by Dan Kennedy, but Zusi was alert and headed the rebound to Sapong, who headed home from close range.
Just seven minutes later, Chivas could have tied the match, but Nick LaBrocca struck the far post after being played behind Sporting KC's defense. Rookie Casey Townsend had a golden opportunity just a few minutes later, but skied a shot over the bar from inside the box.
The visitors had chances to increase their lead, but Kennedy was in sharp form to deny a second goal. Ultimately, it mattered not, as Sporting won the match without allowing a single shot on goal.
