The Galaxy stayed fourth in the Western Conference with a 1-0 win over Chivas USA on Sunday night.CARSON, Calif. – A Gyasi Zardes header gave the LA Galaxy a 1-0 win over Chivas USA in the Derby de Los Angeles.
The play in what is called the SuperClasico took a subsidiary role to two other events. Before the match, the 14,575 in the stadium observed a moment of silence for former Chivas USA youth player Julio Chavez, who died last week. The Goats also wore black armbands.
Then, at halftime, a plane with the message “Fuera Vergara” (Vergara Out, referring to Jorge Vergara, the owner of Chivas USA and Chivas Guadalajara) flew over the StubHub Center, though it was barely visible.
Between those events, the Galaxy scored the game's only goal.
Just past the half hour mark, the Galaxy put the ball in the back of the net. Dan Kennedy cleared, and LA headed back into the attack along the right. Landon Donovan swerved a low cross to the top of the box, where Robbie Rogers drilled a shot into the bottom corner. However, Robbie Keane screened Kennedy from an offside position, and the goal didn't stand.
Two minutes later, Zardes took a snap shot in the box that clanked off the post.
In the waning minutes of the half, Oswaldo Minda came out with a left adductor injury. The Galaxy capitalized in the 44th minute. Donovan took a free kick from the right. From near the penalty spot, Zardes rose to flick a header off the post and into the net for the goal.
A drab second half closed out with Zardes spurning a series of chances to put the game to bed. The rookie finished with eight shots. Chivas USA, the entire team, took six.
The Goats have now lost seven straight and are winless in 10.
