The Fire control their own destiny heading into the final weekend after the MVP candidate's 20th goal moved them into a tie for third place. As June began, the Chicago Fire found themselves at 2-7-2 and well beyond the postseason picture. Four and a half months later, they control their own playoff destiny entering the regular season finale.
Mike Magee converted a second-half penalty kick for the Fire (14-12-7) in a 1-0 win over Toronto FC (5-17-11) on Saturday, moving Chicago into a tie with Montreal for third in the Eastern Conference. With a win next weekend at the New York Red Bulls, Chicago will clinch a playoff berth.
Chicago came out of the gate strong, controlling possession and creating chances. But the heroics of Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei kept the Fire off the board before halftime.
The Fire finally got their goal in the 64th minute. As Magee struck a free kick, the ball deflected off the tucked-in arm of Toronto's Jonathan Osorio — leading the referee to harshly point to the spot.
With Frei diving to his right, Magee floated his penalty down the middle. It was the 20th goal of the season for Magee, who tied Marco Di Vaio for the league lead and enhanced his MVP credentials.
