MLS Preview: Chicago Fire - Sporting Kansas City

MLS Preview: Chicago Fire - Sporting Kansas City

Brad Penner

Coming off their first win of 2014, the Fire will look to make it two in a row when they face a Kansas City side badly shorthanded in central defense.

No Matt Besler. No Aurelien Collin. No Ike Opara. No Lawrence Olum.

It's dire times for Sporting Kansas City's center back corps as the defending MLS Cup champion travels to face the Chicago Fire on Sunday (3 p.m. ET, UniMas). With Besler (USA) and Olum (Kenya) on national team duty, Collin doubtful with a hamstring strain, and Opara a long-term injury absentee, coach Peter Vermes will need to get creative with his lineup at Toyota Park.

Kansas City, which will also be missing U.S. midfielder Graham Zusi, dropped to 5-3-2 on Wednesday as the slumping Philadelphia Union picked up a surprising 2-1 win at Sporting Park.

The 1-2-6 Fire, meanwhile, notched their first victory of the season last weekend when they came out on top of a 5-4 thriller against the New York Red Bulls, with rookie midfielder Harrison Shipp recording a hat trick.
