Chicago Fire 1-0 Sporting Kansas City: Early goal opens up East

The crowded Eastern Conference playoff race got even tighter as Kansas City fell to the Fire.

The Chicago Fire stormed back into the Major League Soccer playoff race with a vital 1-0 win over Eastern Conference leader Sporting Kansas City at Toyota Park.

Chicago scored the game's only goal early early, netting in just the 13th minute. Jalil Anibaba's long throw was cleared and came back to him. The fullback sent a cross in across the penalty area, and although it was long, Dilly Duka was able to keep it in play and cut the ball back into the path of Hunter Jumper, making just his second MLS start. Jumper's low diving header was enough, and he scored to put Chicago up 1-0.

Chris Rolfe wasted a golden opportunity to put his team up two when he spurned a breakaway in the 64th minute. Charging out of midfield, his run drifted wide, as did his eventual shot.

Chicago now sits in sixth place with 34 points, but the Fire are close to the playoffs, just five points back of KC with two games in hand.
