Commanding performance though was taken off at half-time after receiving a knock.
The visible leader for his side in a display that showed what we have come to expect from the center-back; momentary lapses in concentration defensively, but an excellent foundation for most of his team’s drives forward.
Game was defined by two challenges on Orlando Sa. The first was an outrageous effort on the stretch that stole the ball off the striker, the second a clumsy bundle that earned himself a red card and the opposition a penalty.
Quiet and seemed threatened by the pace of Frei. Had none of the inquisition of Bosingwa and will surely see himself winning limited appearances this term.
Probably the greatest credit you could give him was that Chelsea didn’t seem to miss Ashley Cole too much. Did all the things usually associated with the man blocking his first team entrance.
Utilized a great array of passing combined with some neat and tidy footwork but did little to really thrust his side forward.
Was the elder statesman of Chelsea midfield three and seems to be adapting well to the withdrawn role he is been used in of late. Used the ball cleverly throughout.
Shored things up as the shield for his back four and spared Cech’s blushes with a handy interception in the second half, yet adventure or effective use of the ball really did come at a premium. A useful foundation of a debut but definitely one to build on.
Was the architect of a couple half chances before he slid in from an offside position to convert Kalou’s goal-bound effort. Hobbled off soon after that in the first half.
Looked off the pace and had he showed any predatory instinct could have bagged himself a hat-trick. Will find it difficult to get a sniff of regular first-team action after this one.
Lots of hustle bustle but can barely remember him being on the ball. Will need better service to fully capitalize on his hulking frame.
Made a few smart stops though wasn’t tested anyway near as much as Chelsea’s continued pressure warranted.
Sat deep and sprayed the ball around, being fully content to safeguard his back four. Didn’t really put a foot wrong all evening.
Attacking in earnest with marauding runs down the right, which often gave Chelsea food for thought, though such incidents were limited as he found himself hemmed in for most of the evening.
His pocket must be stretched as Lukaku was sat in it for near-on the entirety of the game. A robust and commanding performance.
Failed to stop a lot of Chelsea attacks down the right early on but gradually grew in stature. Adapted to the task at hand and deserved the clean sheet.
Really showed his experience when up against Lukaku to deny the young Belgian any sniff at goal at all really. Should prove to be a great acquisition for the Cottagers.
Impressed with quick feet and sharpness on the ball that befuddled the opposition defence a number of times. Rarely saw his flair craft concrete forays into the Chelsea box, though when he did, he won his team a penalty.
Looks to be another decent purchase for Fulham, with a display that saw him over-ran to begin with, while progressively becoming more influential as the minutes ticked by.
Selfishly lashed an effort into the side-netting after being released by Ruiz in the first, then slammed his penalty against the bar in the second.
Provided an interesting option for Fulham up top with some clever running while working well in tandem with Ruiz. Gave Alex something to think about until the Brazilian was shown an early bath for bringing him down as he was about to pull the trigger.
That’s more like it. A couple touches of real class prized Chelsea open , though Kasami wasted both the chance that was crafted, as well as the penalty that was won. Began to orchestrate things as the game wore on and was drastically unlucky to see his penalty cost his side dearly in the shoot-out
Made a couple of great saves to keep his team in it as the tide changed at half-time.
- 17 José Bosingwa
Expecting a leisurely evening on the bench but was called into action after Alex's red card. Came on with little prior warning and defended stoutly, also having a goal-bound effort cleared off the line.
Introduced at half-time and provided the opening that should have given Chelsea the lead had Kalou not slammed his effort wide. His task became increasingly difficult with his team down to 10 men, though he showed the maturity and leadership Chelsea desperately required at the time.
- 12 J. Obi Mikel
- 10 Mata
- 11 D. Drogba
- 38 N. Etheridge
- 32 R. Halliche
- 3 J. Riise
- 31 A. Kačaniklić
Lined up against a diminished Chelsea midfield without ever really fully imposing himself on the game. Quite disappointing considering Chelsea's tiredness.
Was a real bright spark when he came on and tested the opposition back four's weary legs.
Made a nuisance of himself though seemed unable to really test 10 man Chelsea. Burly presence was negated by the stoic defending of both Luiz and Terry.
