His first real action did not come until the last kick of the first half, when he had to pick the ball up out of the net after being beaten by Benteke's unstoppable drive. But made two critical stops from Weimann in the second half.
Lucky to still be on the pitch after elbowing Benteke, but took advantage of his fortune to rise highest to meet Frank Lampard's free kick and head in Chelsea's winner.
Was run ragged at times by Benteke but just about kept his head above water. Far from the defensive master and commander of Mourinho's first reign.
Solid display from the left-back although he did not get forward much in the second half.
Like Terry, he looked uncomfortable against the all-round talents of Benteke and frequently got caught out of position.
His energy and work-rate was exceptional but struggled to eclipse his well-drilled opponents in midfield.
Following a busy summer and a restricted pre-season, the Spanish wizard began brightly but fizzled out. Looked heavier of touch and slower of leg and brain than usual. Subbed after 64 minutes.
The fire went out on his sizzling start but always looked a threat when he was on the ball. Deserves credit for shooting across Guzan with the shot that led to Luna's early own goal.
Selected in his favourite No.10 role, his touch and movement was excellent in the opening quarter of the game but his effectiveness diminished as the game wore on. Put Hazard through on goal for Chelsea's opener.
Set up Chelsea's winner with a superbly delivered free kick but was not as effective when the ball was in play.
Unimpressive display from the striker. Constantly caught offside in the first half as he tried to take advantage of Villa's high defensive line, while his touch was a little heavy. Subbed after 64 minutes.
Slightly at fault for Chelsea's opener. Pushed Hazard's cross straight against the head of his colleague Luna rather than out of danger. Otherwise, the keeper was less busy than might have been expected.
Uncompromising display from Villa's defensive leader. Dealt capably with the threat of Ba and read the game well.
A fine display from the impressive young right-back. Grew into the game well after a difficult start against the lively Hazard and bombed forward well after the break.
Could do little about his early own goal, when Guzan pushed Hazard's shot into his face, from where it rebounded into the goal. Had few alarms against the sluggish Mata.
Suffered a nasty gash to the head after being accidentally kicked in the face by Ba and was substituted shortly before half-time. Received five stitches at half-time but there is said to be no long-term damage.
An impressive shift in central midfield.
K. El Ahmadi
Pressed the Chelsea midfield with greater energy and diligence. Seemed to be initially affected by his 64th minute booking but was relentless in his endeavour.
Pushed Ramires and Lampard every step of the way in midfield as he showed once again how much he has improved his all-round game.
Took a long time to get into the game but what an impact when he did. His barnstorming, first-time finish on the cusp of half-time was unstoppable, taking his tally to three in two games this season and 17 league goals in all this calendar year. Created a great chance for Weimann to put Villa ahead and was unplayable at times.
Started quietly before he burst into life before the break when he left Ivanovic for dead and smartly pulled back to set up the equaliser for Benteke. His first-time shot from Lowton's cross in the second half was inches from making it 2-1 to Villa.
Got into some excellent positions but was unable to deliver. Had a great volleyed opportunity to put Villa 2-1 up.
Some nice touches from the £18m summer signing. Showed he does not lack in confidence with some long-range pot shots.
Helped to win the free kick that led to Chelsea's winner with his persistence by the byline and brought great presence to the front line. Showed far more than Ba and deserves a starting chance.
