Strikes from Marchese and Bergessio saw Vincenzo Montella's men to claim victory after the visitors went ahead on just 29 seconds
Catania recovered from an early Edinson Cavani strike to record a 2-1 victory over Napoli at Stadio Angelo Massimino. Giovanni Marchese and Gonzalo Bergessio provided the goals for the Sicilians.
It took just 29 seconds for the title hopefuls to take the lead. Andrea Dossena whipped in a cross from the left and Cavani was there to volley the ball home at the near post.
The visitors continued to threaten. Shortly after opening the scoring, Cavani collected the ball on the left and turned his marker before releasing a ferocious shot that Mariano Andujar spilled. The Catania defense was there, however, to spare its goalkeeper's blushes.
The hosts then equalized against the run of play. Alejandro Gomez blasted a shot towards goal, only to see it blocked. Giovanni Marchese seized upon the loose ball, and drilled past a helpless De Sanctis.
The goal gave Catania a shot in the arm. Bergessio laid the back to Sergio Almiron, who sent his shot wide when he could have done better. Napoli had chances of its own, with Ezequiel Lavezzi seeing an effort cleared off the line.
On the stroke of halftime, Napoli’s hopes of victory were dealt a blow when Mario Santana received his marching orders for a clumsy tackle that earned him his second yellow card.
Shortly after the break Catania were ahead. Adrian Ricchiuti sent in a cross from the left, and Bergessio found himself in position to head the ball home.
The match was slipping from Napoli. As it poured men forward, it exposed itself at the back, and could have found itself further behind when Alejandro Gomez ran the length of the pitch, only to drove his shot wide.
Regardless, Walter Mazzarri’s men pushed on. Paolo Cannavaro flashed a shot narrowly wide, before Edinson Cavani miscued a strike he could have buried. Lavezzi then set up Blerim Dzemaili, but his effort was diverted over the bar.
Their attack was for the most part, however, bereft of creativity, and Catania was able to claim a credible win and consign Napoli to its third defeat of the season.
