Live Commentary

  • Thanks for joining Goal's live commentary. We'll be covering Mexico-Panama later today so stay tuned for that.
  • Just like that Martinique has its 1-0 win and Canada is reeling. It's a massive uphill climb for the Canucks now as the final two games of Group A are against Mexico and Panama.
  • 90' + 3'
    Goal Fabrice Olivier Reuperné
It was coming. A corner kick for Martinique gets cleared and it is absolutely HAMMERED in for the win. Nothing less than what Martinique deserves from their play today.
  • 90'
BIG SAVE! Borjan keeps the game scoreless as Gustan aims for the top corner. Massive stop.
  • 86'
    SubstitutionMarcus Haber Jonathan Osorio
  • 85'
    Yellow Card Russell Teibert
  • 85'
Teibert takes down a Martinique player JUST outside the box. Free kick goes just high.
  • 80'
    SubstitutionYoann Arquin Mathias Coureur
  • 79'
SubstitutionDaniel Julien Hérelle Fabrice Olivier Reuperné
  • 76'
    SubstitutionOlivier Thomert Gael Germany
  • 76'
Almost an own goal by Martinique! De Guzman intercepts a pass and chips it in. The Martinique defender knocks it backward, forcing his keeper to make a diving stop. That would have been a disaster.
  • 75'
Jackson nutmegs his defender and gets a cross into the area, but it's dealt with easily. Canada putting as bit more pressure on, but still not overly threatening.
  • 72'
    Yellow Card Grégory Arnolin
  • 71'
Less than 20 minutes left, and it's really tough to figure out where the goals will come from.
  • 66'
EDGAR OFF THE BAR! With the ball still not fully cleared, Teibert lofts in a cross finiding Edgar, whose glancing header hits the crossbar.
  • 65'
SAVE MARTINIQUE! Haber gets a strike off from 12 yards, and it's tipped over. The ensuing corner goes for nothing.
  • 62'
Game has slowed down considerably. Neither side look particularly threatening right now.
  • 56'
CLOSE CALL! Ledgerwood finds himself free on the rgight flank, and his cross to Jackson is JUST out of the striker's reach. Any kind of touch would have put Canada up 1-0 for sure.
  • 51'
    SubstitutionWill Johnson Simeon Jackson
  • 50'
BORJAN AGAIN! Gustain dances into along the end line, and his shot for in close is palmed over the bar. The ensuing corner kick leads to nothing for Martinique.
  • 48'
NICE SAVE BY BORJAN! Piquionne gets a head on a good cross, but the Canadian keeper dives to his right to grab the ball.
  • 46'
We're back underway at the Rose Bowl!
  • As for Martinique, they are very raw and athletic, but they should feel aggreived not to be up by 1 or 2.
  • Lots of concerns for Canada heading into the halftime break. The Canucks are really looking like a team that has never played together, which it essentially is (aside from a couple of players).
  • 45' + 2'
We're into added time in Pasadena. Canada finally out of the sustained pressure from the past 15 minutes or so.
  • 42'
Martinique should probably have a couple of goals by now if not for shocking finishing. Colin Miller needs to really shake things up at half time or suffer the consequences.
  • 38'
    Yellow Card Nicolas Ambroise Zaïre
  • 35'
    Yellow Card Will Johnson
  • 32'
My apologies for the lack of updates so far. Having a bit of an Internet issue here, working on it.
  • 22'
Canada looking very awkward, turth be told. Should be all over this Martinique side, but instead they are very disjointed.
  • 15'
Canada's got the run of this game, and should rightfully be up by now. True to form though, finishing and ability in the final third is the difference.
  • 10'
Martinique's been giving up a bunch of corners. Canada needs to capitalize.
  • 2'
Ricketts breaks down the right and gets a shot/cross in. First chance of the match.
  • 1'
    We're underway in Pasadena!
  • Martinique subs bench: GK Vermignon, GK Chauvet, Ravi, Germany, Sery, Linord, Tresfield, Berdix, Reuperne, Delem, Coureur, Abaul
  • Martinique starting XI: Olimpa, Herelle, Zaire, Gustan, Piquionne, Arquin, Thomert, Parsemain, Arnolin, Cretinoir, Babin
  • Canada's subs bench: GK Hirschfeld, GK Thomas, Morgan, Jackson, Nakajima-Farran, Pacheco, Bekker, Edwini-Bonsu, Straith, Osorio, Aleman
  • Canada's starting XI: GK Borjan; Ledgerwood, Henry, Edgar, De Jong; Piette, De Guzman; Ricketts, Johnson (c), Teibert; Haber
  • And with that, lets get to the lineups for both teams...
  • The biggest news in Canadian soccer recently is that a new head coach has been hired. Spaniard Benito Floro, ex of Real Madrid, Villarreal, and Mexico's Monterrey, will helm the national team from Aug. 1 onward. He is in attendance for today's game at the Rose Bowl but only as an observer. The Gold Cup is Miller's show.
  • Interim head coach Colin Miller, normally the gaffer for NASL side FC Edmonton, has called a highly youthful side, with most of the known Canadian players being left at home for this tournament.
  • Meanwhile, Canada will be looking to use this tournament as a bit of a stepping stone for many young players, as the country looks to build its program after yet another failed World Cup qualifying campaign.
  • Martinique is an overseas department of France, meaning that all of its citizens are French nationals. This helps its football team, in that many players from France have taken the opporutinty to represent the tiny island in international competition.
  • Canada is ranked 88th in the world as of last week's FIFA rankings, while Martinique is not a FIFA member and therefore is not ranked at all.
  • Welcome to Goal's live commentary of the 2013 Gold Cup opener between Canada and Martinique. I'm Rudi Schuller (@RudiSchuller on Twitter) and I'll be taking you through today's match.
