Despite being outplayed by the French for the majority of the match, Canada came out with the Olympic bronze medal for the first time.

A goal in the 91st minute from Diana Matheson was enough to give Canada's women a 1-0 victory over France to earn the Olympic bronze medal in Coventry on Thursday.

France failed to capitalize on its many chances throughout the match.

Except for Christine Sinclair’s breakaway opportunity in the 25th minute where she failed to get a shot off, the first half was devoid of any real chances, as both teams traded possession methodically.

In the second half, France thoroughly dominated proceedings and came close on several occasions, especially in the 61st and 63rd minute when Gaetane Thiney and Elodie Thomis were kept out by the woodwork.

With only seconds remaining in the match, Canada found the breakthrough on its third attempt on goal with Matheson picking up a lose ball in the French box and slotting it home past goalkeepr Sarah Bouhaddi.

The medal is Canada’s first in Olympic summer team sports since 1936.
