Canada 3-0 Cuba: Reds take three points

Goals from Tosaint Ricketts, Will Johnson and David Edgar gave Canada a 3-0 win in the country's Group C World Cup qualifier with Cuba.

Goals from Tosaint Ricketts, Will Johnson and David Edgar gave Canada a 3-0 win over Cuba at BMO Field on Friday evening in a CONCACAF Group C World Cup qualifier.

Ricketts scored just 14 minutes in after getting on the end of a cross from Ante Jazic. Simeon Jackson played a part in the buildup playing Jazic down the wing with a scooped pass to the Chivas USA fullback before Ricketts knocked home the final ball.

Johnson doubled Canada’s total in the 72nd minute, heading home a cross into the bottom left corner of the goal, before David Edgar brought the score to 3-0 with a cool volleyed finish from a Jazic cross six minutes later.

Both teams finished with 10 men, each suffering a second-half sending off apiece. Cuba was the first to lose a man, as Roberto Linares went in late with a studs up challenge on Andre Hainault, prompting referee Javier Santos to send him off in the 70th minute.

Only three minutes later Olivier Occean also saw red, as he attempted to grab the ball following Johnson’s goal. In the ensuing melee, Occean shoved Cuban goalkeeper Odelin Molina, who went down theatrically, prompting Santos to once again reach for the back pocket.

Cuba’s lone quality opportunity came on 57 minutes, as Yoel Colome cracked a left-footed effort just wide to the left of the target from distance. Roberto Linares played a part in the buildup with a nice backheel.
Canada had a slew of missed opportunities throughout the match. Four minutes in Occean hammered a ball against a defender from close range.

In the 25th minute Atiba Hutchinson had a goal called off after the linesman raised his flag to indicate Simeon Jackson was offside. Replays appeared to indicate that Jackson didn’t touch the ball and that Hutchinson wasn’t in an offside position.

A minute before half-time, Hutchinson turned well and cracked an effort with his left foot, but Odelin Molina made a strong reaction save. Moments later Molina made a diving save from a David Edgar header from close range.
With the win, Canada now sits on 10 points in Group C, and is next in action against Honduras in the final group match on Tuesday.
