Was fairly untroubled in the first half, thanks to Lewis Dunk's saving challenge and Leon Best's shot rolling wide of his far post. But made a great stop early in the second to deny Best.
Got caught out a few times by Ben Arfa, but did well to keep going and prevent Newcastle from playing in the second half, especially after taking a boot in the face.
A goal-saving tackle to deny Danny Simpson in the first half, and played well at the back for most of the game, marshaled the defense very well.
Looked like he could be in for a rocky night with some of the early play, but recovered well and put in a good shift at right back.
A solid performance from the center back, made some good clearances and generally did well to stop Ameobi.
Was booked for a bad challenge on Cabaye in the first half, and was subsequently withdrawn at halftime by Gus Poyet. Not a display to remember for the midfielder.
Some good running and got the better of Davide Santon a couple of times. Generally a menace throughout. His goal was equal parts luck and effort, a storming run that took him from his own half and ended with his deflected shot grabbing the winner, which may end up going down as an own goal.
Some fine passing in the early stages, including a good ball over the top for Buckley to chase. Kept calm in the center and spread the ball well.
Was taken off in the second half after failing to make too much of an impact.
Caused hassle for the center backs with his hold-up play and boundless energy. His first effort of the night was a little wayward on the counter attack, but his second forced a smart stop from Krul.
A decent performance from the winger, but Simpson did get the better of him for most of the game. Tracked back well. Perhaps fortunate to get away with a late handball.
Didn't have too much to do in all honesty, but made a solid save from Brighton's first effort via Craig Mackail-Smith. Couldn't do much about Buckley's goal, which deflected past him.
Had a fantastic opportunity to open the scoring, but took too long over it and saw his shot blocked. Booked for a bad challenge on Mackail-Smith.
Dealt well with being shifted centrally. Had to be on the look out for Mackail-Smith but his good footwork got him out of a couple of tricky situations.
Effective on the left, putting in some dangerous crosses early in the game, but was caught out on occasion by Buckley in defense. He played some nice stuff but was withdrawn late on. A mixed bag from the left back.
Took a blow to the face but carried on as he played his part in an intriguing battle with Mackail-Smith, one the striker probably got the better of. Was unfortunate that his attempted block deflected the ball past Tim Krul.
A beautiful pass over the top for Leon Best almost earned Newcastle an opener. Some nice passing as you would expect, but needlessly got involved with El-Abd in a couple of incidents, and was perhaps lucky that the officials didn't spot his boot colliding with the defender's face. Went down on a couple of occasions when he really didn't need to.
Seemed to have a free role but wasn't his usual self for much of the game.
Had a couple of efforts in the first half but found the top row on both instances. Came much closer in the second but his half-volley was deflected just over.
H. Ben Arfa
Was a little sloppy on the ball at times, but looked like he was getting going with a trademark winding run in the second half. Was starting to get the better of El-Abd, but was then withdrawn eight minutes from time.
Some good hold up play but didn't really get involved in the first half. Came very close to finding the opener with a shot that deflected just wide.
A good run and touch gave him the first opportunity of the game as he brought down a ball over the top, but his finish was just wide of Peter Brezovan's post. Had an even better chance early in the second when Shola Ameobi put him through, but his tame shot was saved.
- C. Ankergren
- G. Hall
Didn't get too much time on the ball in the game, but played some good soccer and put in plenty of running.
Did well in the center, putting in some good interceptions and nice passes after coming on.
- R. Vincelot
Came on late to waste some vital seconds.
- T. Agdestein
- R. Elliot
Came on for Santon in the last 10 minutes, but didn't have much of a chance to impress. Put in a good cross.
- T. Kádár
Came on to try and change the game but didn't have much time to get going.
Spread the ball nicely when he came on.
