Christophe Galtier's outfit started the season in fine style, taking a win away from the 2009 French champions.
An early own goal from Michael Ciani got the campaign off to the worst possible start for Francis Gillot’s men, who would found themselves 2-0 down at the break after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck. A Jussie penalty drew the 2009 champion back into the match, but though Bordeaux pressed late on, no leveling goal arrived.
An agreeable spectacle began in dreadful fashion for the host team, and in particular center back Ciani, who got himself into a hopeless muddle trying to clear a Bakary Sako cross, turning it inadvertently into his own goal.
Sako was causing all kinds of problems down the flank, nearly prompting another own goal from Ciani midway through the first period.
Sainte’s second goal arrived with a good dose of luck as Aubameyang’s attempted center caught out Cedric Carrasso and ended up in his goal.
Moments later, Gonzalo Bergessio came close to making it 3-0 but was denied by Benoit Tremoulinas’ heroic block.
Bordeaux had not been dominated completely in the first half, though. Landry N’Guemo had whipped a shot just wide, and debutant visiting goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier was called upon to make a good block from Ciani following a Jaroslav Plasil corner.
Into the second half, the home side would start to wrestle a significant degree of control on proceedings, threatening as Anthony Modeste latched onto a Tremoulinas cross but hit his drive high over the top and forcing more action from Ruffier, who was forced to turn away a Plasil shot.
Gillot’s side got its reward just before the hour mark as Jussie converted following a clumsy challenge by Sylvain Marchal on Modeste in the box.
Both sides would have chances in the closing stages and both goalkeepers would be drawn into great blocks, but it was Bordeaux which looked likelier to strike. Matthieu Chalme would go closest for the home outfit, but Ruffier managed to instinctively knee the ball clear on his line.
Carrasso was not to be outdone, making a flying stop to deny Marchal, but ultimately the goalkeeper’s efforts were futile as the visitors had already done enough to secure three opening weekend points.
