Bordeaux 1-0 PSG: Diabate penalty dents visitors' Champions League hopes

A fifth minute penalty from Cheick Diabate as well as an impressive Carrasso peformance consigns PSG to defeat as it loses ground in the race for the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain's hopes of leapfrogging Lyon into the third and final Champions League place was dealt a blow as the club slipped to a 1-0 defeat away to Bordeaux on Wednesday.

A solitary goal from Cheick Diabate consigned the visitors to a first league defeat in seven, as it was made to rue its lack of finishing in front of goal with Cedric Carrasso producing a string of fine saves to keep a clean sheet.

Despite a slow start, the hosts raced into a fifth minute lead when Benoit Tremoulinas drew a foul after Jeremy Clement felled the left-back in the box. Referee Laurent Duhamel, a late replacement for the initial match official Alexandre Castro, didn't hesitate in pointing to the spot, which led to Diabate successfully converting the resulting penalty past Gregory Coupet to break the deadlock.

Mevlut Erding spurned a good opportunity to restore parity seven minutes later, after a pinpoint cross from Nene met the head of the Turkish international, but failed to trouble Cedric Carrasso in the Bordeaux goal.

Les Parisiens began to find its feet in the match after the early setback and was unlucky not to equalize. Christophe Jallet shot wide after meandering his way into the area, before a brilliant stop from Carrasso denied Clement Chantome's low drive following a smooth one-two with Nene.

Seconds later, a quick counter saw Diabate force a smart stop from Coupet, with Jaroslav Plasil shooting wide from the follow on as both sides were made to rue the squandered chances afforded to them in a period of end-to-end attacking play.

Bordeaux's recent defensive frailties were beginning to be exposed by a resurgent PSG and were unfortunate in adding a second to an otherwise strong first-half showing which should've seen a second goal before the interval. Alou Diarra picked up a loose ball in midfield before threading a through pass to set Diabate on his way. The Malian striker got past Ceara with a mix of speed and control before laying off Jussie whose low drive from outside the area flashed wide of the post.

After the break, Antoine Koumbouare's men were denied by a fingertip save from Carrasso following Mathieu Bodmer's stinging effort from the edge of the area. It threatened to be one of those nights for the Parisiens as they were thwarted by the former Marseille custodian, who found himself in inspired form despite nursing a knock he suffered earlier on in the encounter.

As the match wore on, PSG failed to find a response as Jean-Christophe Bahebeck's curling effort was easily dealt with by the Bordeaux goalkeeper. Moments afterwards, a header from Hoarau and a splendid save to deny Nene's dipping freekick left Eric Bedouet's men thankful that their last line of defence was yet to be breached by the onslaught.

The capital club sent on Ludovic Giuly in the final minutes in hope of salvaging a point, however it was run down by an efficient Bordeaux side who only had Carrasso to thank for a much-deserved clean sheet against the misfiring Parisien strikeforce as Anthony Modeste, on as a late substitute, hit the bar in stoppage time.

Koumbouare's men are at home to league leaders' Lille who look set to lift the Ligue 1 title if they avoid defeat at the Parc des Princes on Saturday. The failure to secure the three points tonight means Lyon are still in the driving seat to secure Champions League football, with only two games to go in the season.
