Bologna 0-1 Roma: De Rossi Fires Giallorossi To Victory

A single goal decided a fairly tight affair.

Vincenzo Montella's coaching career got off to a winning start as Roma picked up a narrow victory over Bologna at the Renato Dall'Ara. A deflected long range shot by Daniele De Rossi was enough to seal the three points for the Roman outfit as the Giallorossi jumped ahead of Juventus in the standings and now sit in sixth place.

The game saw Doni return to the starting line-up in goal in place of Julio Sergio, while Rossoblu Alberto Malesani almost completely overhauled the side that recorded a victory over Palermo in the last round.

It was a cautious opening as both teams were apparently waiting for a mistake by the opposition. Mirko Vucinic and Riccardo Meggiorini missed early chances while Marco Di Vaio had a shot fly narrowly wide in the 23rd minute.

Fabio Simplicio had a fine shot saved moments later and near the half-hour mark Doni pulled off a wonderful stop to deny Meggiorini. Simplicio went close once more with a fiercely struck drive in the 38th minute, but saw his finish blocked.

Vucinic had a shot over the bar just before half-time as the game was drawing near the break. With the final kick of the first half, however, De Rossi managed to fire Roma into the lead as his deflected shot from the left side of the box nestled in the top corner.

The tempo slightly dropped after the break as both teams were struggling to create clear-cut chances although Bologna seemed more likely to score. Gaston Ramirez and Di Vaio were particularly active in the attack for the hosts, but they were having trouble breaking down a resolute Giallorossi defense.

There were injury scares for Roma near the hour mark as Philippe Mexes landed awkwardly after jumping for high ball, but the France international managed to shake off the knock and continue the game. Vucinic had the ball in the net in the 78th minute, but his lobbed strike was ruled out.

Substitute Matteo Brighi wasted a wonderful chance to make it 2-0 in the waning minutes of the game after being released through on goal by Jeremy Menez, but failed to put the ball past Emiliano Viviano.

Following tonight's game, Roma are sixth in the standings with 42 points, while Bologna are eleventh with 35. The Giallorossi's next league game is against Parma at the Stadio Olimpico on February 27, while Malesani's men travel to Turin to face Juventus a day earlier.
