Thanks for following along with us tonight, and be sure to check back on Goal later on for post-game reaction from Zac Lee Rigg on the scene in Portland. The USA plays next on Saturday, facing Cuba at Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah. Until then, take care everyone!
Chris Wondolowski's hat trick paved the way for the rout, Landon Donovan had a goal and two assists, and Stuart Holden and Michael Orozco Fiscal notched goals as well.
And there's the final whistle!! USA wins 6-1, opens the Gold Cup in convincing fashion.
90' + 1'
SAVE RIMANDO!! The RSL keeper is alert until the dying moments, as he goes full extension dive to prevent Tasher from getting on the board.
Two minutes of stoppage time have been added before this one goes final
Wondo just misses his fourth!! This one from long range, as he bends a shot from 20-yards just over the cross bar. Close.
Heading into the final moments. All that's left to settle is the final damage. USA will kick off the Gold Cup atop Group C.
Donovan NEARLY puts home a back-heel effort at the goal mouth after a cross-shot from Bedoya gets redirected by Wondolowski into his path. Would've been the icing on the cake there.
OROZCO misses a CLOSE-range header by the right post off another set piece, but he's rightfully whistled for offside, as Shea got a flick on the original free kick.
Granted, the level of competition has not exactly been the tops, but consecutive 6-goal games is nothing to sniff at. And if anything else, the USA will walk away with no real questions to answer (except for that set-piece marking folly)
Penalty GoalLandon Donovan
GOAL USA!! DONOVAN BURIES THE PK! 6-1 USA
Bedoya sends in a cross that inadvertently hits the arm of Torres in the box, and the PK is granted. Donovan to take.
PENALTY FOR THE USA!
Donovan gets his 51st assist for the USA by sending in a laser to the center of the box, where Orozco Fiscal headed it home for his first goal since the one that defeated Mexico at Azteca last August. 5-1 USA, and the rout is on.
GOAL USA!!! MICHAEL OROZCO FISCAL!!
Yellow CardEvan Mariano
USA still looking to pile on and pad that goal differential, and the Americans will have a chance to do so off a set piece as Shea gets hauled down while trying to beat his defender 1-v-1 heading toward the box.
Jimenez rolls another long and low shot Rimando's way off the second attack following a dealt-with Belize corner kick.
Decent night for Corona, who kept the ball alive that led to Wondolowski's first goal with a leaping header and also delivered the secondary ball on Holden's goal.
Alejandro Bedoya replaces Joe Corona as the USA's final substitute, and he nearly scores off his first touch getting a half-chance at the end line.
Flair starting to come out for the USA, with a dummy here, back-heel pass there as the attack continues to build. Can't get careless, though, as Belize capitalize off a sloppy ball and nearly cuts into the deficit off the counter.
Jose Torres walks off for Brek Shea after a solid hour-long shift. Combined well on the night, looked comfortable on the ball. Shea provides a bit more natural width down that flank.
Corona crossed from the right to the far post, where Landon Donovan headed it down to the center of the box. Holden took his chance for a very meaningful goal. And for Landon Donovan, that is assist No. 50, putting him in the 50-goal, 50-assist club.
GOAL USA!!!! STUART HOLDEN!! WELCOME BACK
BEASLEY has a tight-angled shot turned out for a corner after a slick combo between Holden, Wondolowski and Torres put him in on goal down the left. Nicely worked.
Belize comes up with a couple of blocks inside the area after the ensuing corner, with Corona having a pair of shots blocked. The second of which Elroy Smith took into the groin. Ouch.
TORRES has a chance from inside the area blocked by Gaynair but out for a corner.
Rimando scoops up an easy, low shot from Belize's Daniel Jimenez. Underdogs coming out with a bit more attacking intent this half, needing two goals to equalize.
Yellow CardTrevor Lennon
And Lennen gets away with a VICIOUS tackle on Diskerud, coming in two footed, studs up and connecting with the midfielder's ankle. Receives just a yellow despite pleas from the entire USA team. Certainly looked like a red-worthy challenge.
OK folks, Stuart Holden is coming on for the USA, replacing Kyle Beckerman, so he'll get a solid 45 minutes to continue building on his strong performance against Guatemala.
The USA will take the lead into the half after that wild flurry of action, with Chris Wondolowski netting a hat trick. There will be definite disappointment for conceding a goal off that set piece, but the USA remains firmly in control up 3-1
USA pushing for a fourth as the half winds down, but Diskerud's ball into the area is cleared away.
The action is fast and furious, but just as Belize stunned the USA by scoring, Parkhurst's cross from the right gets redirected home by Wondo for his third goal of the half. 3-1
GOAL USA!!!! WONDOLOWSKI FOR THE HAT TRICK!!
Belize earned a free kick from the right wing, and Gaynair was totally unmarked for the close range connection.
And BELIZE DOES PULL ONE BACK!! Ian Gaynair! Point-blank header! Wow. 2-1.
MCCAULEY nearly pulls one back for Belize! Sends Rimando sprawling with a chance from distance.
Wondo cashes in on his close-range chance with a diving header, redirecting Kyle Beckerman's pinpoint cross past a helpless Orio. 2-0 USA
GOAL USA!!! WONDOLOWSKI AGAIN!!
Torres fires high from close range!!! GOLDEN chance to put the USA up 2-0
Rimando is forced to get out of his rocking chair and claim a cross into his area. Tough on a night like this for a goalkeeper to remain focused and in tune with what's going on in front of him, but Rimando was ready for that.
SAVE ORIO!! Went to the ground to kick away a Corona attempt off a Donovan feed. Nice spin and turn by Donovan off the giveaway to create the opportunity. Corner kick USA.
Think Belize would take this scoreline heading into the half in a heartbeat, especially considering they've conceded 80 percent (!) of the possession.
CORONA whips a ball in through the 6-yard box that Orio gets down and controls. Looked to have open options at the near post, far post and with a trailing run. Missed opportunity for the USA.
Some one-touch passing between Beckerman and Corona leads to a cross through the Belize box, but it's headed away. USA continuing to pepper the final third with crosses and passes, but Belize is mostly up to the task.
And Nick Rimando finally makes a touch. Goes sprawling toward his upper 90 to swipe away a lofted attempt on goal.
McCauley with a rare touch moving forward for Belize, but he loses it unforced out of the sideline. Not a whole lot of help with him with Belize committing so many numbers in defense.
Donovan and Corona NEARLY connect for a give-and-go combo that would have put Corona in on goal, had he not slipped on the Jeld-Wen turf and missed the return pass.
Belize applying some high pressure, but the USA has no problem playing out of the back, with Torres, Beasley and Goodson controlling the ball. A walk in the park for now, but more goals will be wanted before halftime to put this result to bed early.
Wondolowski may be on a roll, but he's getting no respect from the USA equipment team. His uniform reads "Wondowlowski." Whoops.
Beasley wins a corner for the USA off an overlapping run and a cheeky chipped ball by Torres put him in toward the Belize box.
That makes for goals in consecutive USA games by Wondolowski, who had struggled to make the same prolific mark on the international level than he has with the San Jose Earthquakes. Big goal to ease any tension and keep Belize on its heels.
Wondolowski ever the poacher, rifled home unmarked from close range after Joe Corona put a header off a Torres cross on frame. 1-0 USA
GOAL USA!!!! CHRIS WONDOLOWSKI!!
First semblance of possession for Belize, which is having trouble finding any seams to exploit. USA does a fine job at retrieving possession
Another ball sent in from the right flank for Torres, but Orio is quickest to the ball again. Would not shock to see Orio with the most touches among Belize players tonight.
Dangerous chance for the USA, as Donovan picks out Goodson by the far post, where he heads a square ball across the edge of the 6-yard-box, but Orozco can't turn a chance on frame.
Diskerud takes an elbow from Lennen as his official welcome gift to the USA. About as menacing as Belize has been in any capacity though. All USA as the Stars and Stripes pass around looking for an opening.
Wondolowski gets by his defender carrying forward on the right but whips in a cross hit right at Shane Orio, the Belize goalkeeper who figures to be in for a very busy night.
USA presents all sorts of early pressure, whipping in two corner kicks and having Donovan bend in a cross that gets headed out. All USA on the ball, as expected.
And this match is UNDERWAY
Another thing to keep an eye on tonight: Landon Donovan could join the 50-50 club with an assist. He crossed the 50-goal barrier with his brace against Guatemala in his long-awaited return to the national team, and he is on 49 assists for his international career.
For the USA, a rout is obviously the stated goal. Costa Rica topped Cuba 3-0 tonight in the first match of Group C, so keeping pace with Los Ticos would be preferred. Then again, perhaps just avoiding the upset bug that struck Mexico and Canada should be priority No. 1...
Deon McCauley is one to watch for Belize. He actually has the most goals in this CONCACAF World Cup qualifying cycle with 11, all of which were scored in the first two rounds before Belize was eliminated. He was on trial with the Portland Timbers in the winter and will be looking to make a name for himself in this competition. No better place to do that than against the USA. Orozco Fiscal and Goodson beware.
GK - Shane Orio D - Dalton Eiley, Elroy Smith, Evral Trapp, Luis Torres M - Tyrone Pandy, Trevor Lennen, Ian Gaynair F - Evan Mariano, Deon McCauley, Harrison Roches
As for Belize, the underdogs will line up like this:
Herculez Gomez, Stu Holden and Oguchi Onyewu are among the lineup omissions tonight that might raise a question or two, but with the game on a turf surface, and Holden and Onyewu having checkered injury histories, it's not a huge surprise to see them left out to start. Gomez, too, is coming off a knee injury of his own. Just means it's an opportunity for the likes of Wondolowski, Diskerud and Orozco Fiscal to take their chances.
By virtue of playing in the Gold Cup, Mix Diskerud will be cap-tied to the United States, ending all speculation that he might jump ship and play for his native Norway. He's locked in now.
That puts the USA in a 4-1-3-2, with Joe Corona and Jose Torres being counted on to supply the width. Look for fullbacks Michael Parkhurst and DaMarcus Beasley to assist in that regard considering neither Corona nor Torres is a true wide player.
GK - Nick Rimando D - Michael Parkhurst, Michael Orozco Fiscal, Clarence Goodson, DaMarcus Beasley (C) M - Joe Corona, Kyle Beckerman, Mix Diskerud, Jose Torres F - Landon Donovan, Chris Wondolowski
Here is the USA lineup being trotted out by Jurgen Klinsmann tonight:
This is the first-ever meeting between these two nations. Belize is coached by Ian Mork, a Witchita, Kan., native who actually has a part-time role with U.S. Soccer.
The USA is heavily favored to take care of business tonight in Portland, where the two sides meet at Jeld-Wen Field. Both teams are coming off friendlies against Guatemala. The USA took a 6-0 result on Friday, while Belize played Guatemala to a 0-0 draw on June 11.
Good evening everyone and welcome to tonight's LIVE commentary of the U.S. national team's CONCACAF Gold Cup opener against upstart Belize.
