  • Landon Donovan, Teal Bunbury, Chris Pontius and Fabian Johnson will not join the team in Belgium, though only Donovan played in Friday's 1-0 loss to Costa Rica. Donovan and Bunbury were released to play for their respective sides in Monday's Sporting Kansas City-Los Angeles Galaxy showdown.
  • Clint Dempsey, Steve Cherundolo and Kyle Beckerman will join the squad in Belgium, having been exempted from the trip to California for various reasons. Beckerman played the full 90 minutes for Real Salt Lake in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union and was involved in both goals, scoring the first and assisting the second.
  • The match will see a three pairs of club teammates face off. Clint Dempsey will see Fulham teammate Moussa Dembele wearing the opposing colors, while Everton teammates Tim Howard and Marouane Fellaini will also line up against each other. Sacha Kljestan, who plays his club soccer in Belgium with Anderlecht, will see some familiar faces, though the only Anderlecht player in the squad, Denis Odoi, will not feature after picking up a small knock.
  • The other absence for Belgium will be Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen, who picked up a small injury in training ahead of the match. Lille star Eden Hazard could also be rested to kick things off after pulling up in training on Monday. PSV's center back Timothy Derijck, who is uncapped for Belgium, was called up in Vertonghen's place.
  • In its last game out, on Sept. 2, the United States lost 1-0 to Costa Rica, thanks to a second half goal from Portland Timbers' Rodney Wallace. The result leaves Jurgen Klinsmann with a 0-1-1 record as coach of the U.S. national team.
  • In its previous game, a Euro 2012 qualifier on Sept. 2, Belgium was held 1-1 at Azerbaijan. Timmy Simons  gave the Belgians the lead from the penalty spot early in the second half, but the team conceded a late equalizer, which put a big dent in the country's Euro 2012 hopes. It currently lies third place in Group A, one point behind second-placed Turkey, which also has a game in hand over Belgium.
  • This will be the fourth meeting between the United States and Belgium. The teams first met in the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, with the U.S. coming out 3-0 victors. Since then, the two have played two friendly matches in Belgium, both in Brussels. The home side has had a perfect record in those matches, having won 1-0 in 1995 and 2-0 in 1998, giving Belgium a 2-1-0 record in the overall series between the two countries.
