Live Commentary

  • That's it! Belgium wins 1-0. The Americans showed some decent signs defensively, but their attack didn't ever really get going until the tail end. Not a terrible result, but more work is clearly needed.
  • 90'
Lukaku finds himself behind the defense as he pulls Goodson down, but his shot baloons over the bar
  • 86'
U.S. scores, but it's waived off! Edu puts a header in the back of the net, but the flag is up. It's unclear what the call was. The USA had players in an offside position, but they weren't involved. Maybe a hand ball?
  • 84'
U.S. attacking down the right flank, as Cherundolo puts in a great cross that can't find a head.
  • 82'
Chance for Belgium, as Witsel's deflected strike goes wide. Howard was stranded after the deflection, though.
  • 80'
Edu with a couple bad giveaways in a row. He looks gassed.
  • 79'
Agudelo gets some space, but can't beat his marker in the box in a one-on-one situation
  • 77'
    Substitution J. Torres Jeff Larentowicz
  • 77'
Interesting sub: Larentowicz coming on for Torres. U.S. has three defensive mids, it would seem. Edu may advance further upfield now.
  • 75'
Mertens hits a free-kick that's cleared by the U.S. Klinsmann's defensive subs have stifled the Belgians' attack better this half. Now, can they find an elusive goal?
  • 71'
Dempsey beats his man and dribbles into the box, but his shot is tame and right at the keeper. This is better from the U.S., though.
  • 70'
Shea wins the ball well and crosses in, but great defense from Kompany denies Agudelo at the near post
  • 68'
U.S. with a good spell of possession in the Belgian half, but Chandler's shot from distance is well high and wide
  • 64'
    Substitution Eden Hazard Ogunjimi
  • 63'
    Substitution Marouane Fellaini David Hubert
  • 63'
Substitution Igor De Camargo Romelu Lukaku
  • 63'
Edu tries to slip Agudelo through, but the pass is too long. Creativity really lacking in the attacking third
  • 60'
The U.S. starting to press forward a bit after conceding, but hasn't yet shown the ability to create real dangerous chances
  • 56'
    Goal Nicolas Lombaerts
  • 56'
Long throw was headed out, but not all the way, and Lombaerts' left-footed effort sneaks under Howard, who may have been screened.
  • 55'
GOAL BELGIUM! It's Nicolas Lombaerts with a strike from the top of the box!
  • 55'
Mertens dances his way into the box, but Edu covers well to give Belgium a corner
  • 54'
Becekrman winning balls in the midfield; Klinsmann's sub looks to be working well already
  • 52'
Shea is given room to strike, but his shot is badly scuffed from distance.
  • 48'
Beckerman with a decent chance on the half volley after good work by Shea, but the shot flies over
  • 47'
The U.S. switching to two defensive midfielders with Beckerman coming on to help Edu
  • 46'
    Substitution Jozy Altidore J. Agudelo
  • 46'
    Substitution Robbie Rogers Kyle Beckerman
  • 46'
Second half underway. Two subs for the U.S. at the half: Agudelo on for Altidore and Beckerman on for Rogers.
  • That's the half. The U.S. should be happy that it is scoreless as it has been second-best so far. The Americans are lacking possession and the ability to create good chances right now
  • 45'
USA just can't keep the ball at the moment. It will be happy to see this 0-0 at the half
  • 43'
U.S. tries to break and Rogers fortunately wins a free-kick. Torres whips it in, but it is headed clear
  • 40'
Belgium still in control. Great ball movement, but the final shot by Fellaini is poor
  • 36'
U.S. needs to slow the game down now. Been under siege the last 10 minutes
  • 34'
Close for Belgium again! Cross driven in and Fellaini's volley is beaten away by Howard
  • 33'
Altidore has drifted out of this match. Has been poor these last 20 min
  • 31'
Big space available for the Belgians to attack, as Hazard's near-post shot earns a corner. Bocanegra nearly scores an own-goal off the ensuing corner kick.
  • 28'
Belgium looking dangerous now. Mertens cuts in from the left and strikes just wide
  • 27'
Great save Howard! Simons with a good low strike from outside the box brings a diving save from the American keeper
  • 24'
Maurice Edu has done well so far in the "number 6" holding mid role
  • 20'
Free-kick now for Belgium on the side of the box. Mertens drives it in, but Dempsey clears with his head
  • 19'
Rogers then wins a free kick, which Torres whips in, and almost curls into the back post
  • 17'
U.S. has been favoring the left side to attack. Haven't seen much of Robbie Rogers on the right
  • 15'
Hazard with great play to carve up the U.S. midfield, but the Americans clear the danger
  • 11'
Good interplay between Dempsey, Torres, and finally Shea earns the U.S. a corner. Headed clear by Toby Alderweireld of Belgium
  • 10'
Hazard vs. Chandler on the right flank will be a matchup to watch. Chandler blocks Hazard's cross there
  • 8'
Shea has been drifting inside quite a bit already. Klinsmann giving him freedom to roam
  • 6'
Dempsey's free-kick skips in front of the keeper Mignolet, who sees it bounce off his face. Altidore nearly steers the rebound in, but the Belgium defense is there.
  • 5'
Good layoff by Altidore for the onrushing Shea who draws a foul on Fellaini
  • 3'
Torres gets in a bit of trouble over-dribbling in the middle of the field and loses it.
  • 1'
