Franck Ribery and Breno made long-awaited returns to action as Bayern Munich won the latest installment of the Bavarian derby.Bayern Munich stars Franck Ribery and Breno returned to action on Sunday evening as FC Hollywood earned a 3-0 victory over Nuernberg in the Bavarian derby. In-form striker Mario Gomez netted a brace, and Philipp Lahm added a third from the penalty spot as the hosts rounded off a comfortable victory.
It took just ten minutes for Gomez to put his name on the scoresheet, but all that hard work was done by Danijel Pranjic. The Croat played a sublime 1-2 with Toni Kroos before squaring for Gomez, who tapped in from close range. Just as Nuernberg were looking to get back into the game, Pranjic sent a low cross to Gomez, who won a penalty from goalkeeper Raphael Schaefer. Skipper Philipp Lahm stepped up to the spot and fired home Bayern's second. Gomez then completed his brace with a 75th minute diving header that put the game out of reach.
The opener was fully deserved for Bayern, who were dominant from the start. Martin Demichelis nearly coubled the advantage midway through the half, but his header missed wide. Later, Toni Kroos and Hamit Altintop stung Schaefer's hands, but the goalkeeper managed to avoid conceding a second goal before half-time.
After the break, Nuernberg looked like equalising, and were rather unfortunate not to level the terms. Julian Schieber had a clear chance miss over the bar after substitute Mike Frantz skinned Daniel van Buyten. Moments later, Schieber won the ball off the Belgian defender inside his penalty area and blasted a shot on goal, but Hans-Joerg Butt made a fine save.
Four minutes after Schieber's twin chances, Lahm's penalty effectively ended the visitors' chance of taking points. Javier Pinola came close with a speculative shot from distance, but only managed to hit the side netting.
In the final quarter of the match Ribery and fellow substitute Thomas Mueller took the game by storm. The latter was unlucky to have two efforts saved before Gomez headed in Ribery's corner. With three minutes left to play, Mueler won a penalty after skillfully taking down a long pass, but Gomez blasted the resulting spot kick over the bar. The striker was beside himself for failing to round off his third hat trick in a month, but his miss had no effect on the final result.
Following tonight's match, Bayern climb to sixth in the Bundesliga table, with 19 points from 12 matches. Nuernberg are 10th, but remain just one point behind their local rivals.
