Live Commentary

  • Full time at the Camp Nou, and Barcelona was simply too good for Villarreal. Messi was at the double, while Thiago, Fabregas and Sanchez all found the net as well. It was a vintage Barcelona performance, leaving few illusions that this year's Liga season will be another two-horse race. That's all from me, Nick Rosano, but you can follow me on Twitter (@nicholasrosano) for plenty more world soccer chatter.

Valdes finally has a save to make and pulls it off very well to deny Camuñas.

Barcelona looking to match Madrid's 6-0 win over Zaragoza, as David Villa receives the ball on the left side of the area and attempts to curl one in, but it's just beyond Alexis Sanchez at the far post.

...and it's the inevitable 5-0. Messi starts and finishes the move, finding Thiago down the right hand channel, who squares back to Messi for the easy finish.
  • 71'
Rossi breaks the Barcelona pressure and sees some space ahead of him, but fires just wide of Victor Valdes' far post, the best and really only chance of the half for Villarreal.

Senna and Rossi nearly find a way through for Villarreal, but on the other end Messi comes back and beats two men before firing right at Lopez.

While Barcelona started its preseason fairly late, they are clearly firing on all cylinders here. The pressing is fierce and the passing combinations and technique are almost perfect.
  • 63'
Some smooth dribbling from Messi opens up space for Fabregas, but the midfielder is caught in two minds and his ball across rolls harmlessly behind, finding neither the net nor the onrushing Xavi.
  • 61'
Really not much in this one since the fourth goal. Barcelona content to let up a bit, while Villarreal has thrown on all its subs.

It's 4-0! Another wonderful passing move from Barcelona with Iniesta threading through for Messi, who takes it around Lopez and gets his right foot around it to score his 100th goal at the Camp Nou.

  • 47'
It's another debutant goal as a chipped pass over the top finds Alexis Sanchez, who burns Villarreal's high line with his pace and finishes calmly. 3-0 and sure game over just two minutes into the second half.
  • 46'
The second half is underway at the Camp Nou.
  • It's halftime at the Nou Camp with Thiago opening the scoring for Barcelona in the 25th minute and Cesc Fabregas netting his first lague goal in the 45th minute. It will be a very tough road back for Villarreal, which has occasionally threatened through Giuseppe Rossi.
  • 45'
It's a fab finish from Fabregas as Barcelona goes 2-0 up on the stroke of halftime! Messi threads through to Fabregas, who breaks the offside trap, rounds Lopez, and coolly passes into the back of the net.

Barcelona has slowed down somewhat as the first half is drawing to a close, but has some a decent job of containing Rossi and Villarreal in the same time.
  • 38'
Rossi so very nearly! He gets in behind again and Valdes gets something on it – goes on to the bar and comes very close to crossing the line, but the flag was up. Still, you get the sense that Rossi will continue to trouble Barcelona for the rest of the game.

    Yellow CardCesc Fàbregas

Cesc Fabregas booked, too, apparently for failing to move back in the wall for the free kick following Mascherano's foul. The free kick struck the wall and Villarreal put it back in, but failed to get back onside.
  • 34'
    Yellow CardJavier Mascherano
  • 32'
Booking for Mascherano as he brings down Nilmar. Barcelona actually catch a break there as the referee probably should have played advantage with Villarreal having two players behind with the ball following the challenge.
  • 26'
Giuseppe Rossi very nearly equalizes with his team's first real chance of the game. He was behind after a run down the left-hand channel, but his powerful effort went into the side netting from a fairly tricky angle.

  • 25'
GOAL Barcelona! It's Thiago who makes it 1-0, as he strides from the back into the area and places it into the far corner with his left foot. Way too much time and space afforded to the youngster by the VIllarreal defense.
  • 22'
Messi with a perfectly weighted pass towards Fabregas, but an excellent saving tackle from Rodriguez prevented what could have well been the new Barcelona man's first league goal.
  • 21'
    Yellow CardCristian Zapata
  • 21'
Villarreal's Cristian Zapata sees yellow for handball, the first booking of the game.
  • 18'
Very nearly a rare type of goal for Barcelona! Sergio Busquets header from the resulting corner skimmed the crossbar!
  • 17'
It's still all Barcelona as Pedro finds Messi, who gets in behind Gonzalo Rodriguez, only to have his effort well saved by Lopez.
  • 13'
Barcelona is finding its rhythm as Messi very nearly latched on to a looping header, but Lopez was aware to punch away.
  • 9'
Sanchez and Fabregas combine well and nearly find a way through, but have to settle for Barcelona's second corner of the game.
  • 7'
Diego Lopez made a hash of a Barcelona corner, but the home side could not take advantage, letting Lopez and Villarreall off the hook.
  • 6'
Not surprisingly, Barcelona has been playing mostly in Villarreal's half so far. Messi with a nice bit of skill to find Sanchez, but his shot is deflected into the arms of Villarreal 'keeper Diego Lopez.
  • 2'
While Villarreal hasn't had much success in the last year or two, it does have an impressive record at Camp Nou, with three wins, four draws and five losses. Last year's edition of this game saw Barcelona win 3-1.

Barcelona kicks things off at the Camp Nou!
  • Welcome to the marquee tie of La Liga's first round of play! Barcelona, with plenty of defensive absences, take on a Villarreal side with plenty of talent and looking to repeat last year's run that took it to Champions League qualification. I'm Nick Rosano and I'll be bringing you live commentary of the game as it unfolds.
