A spectator for long stages he only had three shots to save all match long. Took a nasty fall early in the first half but didn't show many after effects from it. Powerless to do anything about the late winner.
Another who got forward frequently whipping in plenty of quality balls. A frequent threat for most of the game where he had the better of Nagatomo but was beaten by the same player for pace for the cross which led to the winner.
Made an important clearance to deny Japan late in the first half. Pushed forward in extra-time to try and find a winner.
A calm and composed displayed in the Aussie defense which had shifted just one goal prior to the final. Another fine performance where he was rarely troubled.
Sent in a flurry of excellent crosses during the game which deserved better. Made an important block from Maeda but should have done better with his late free-kick in the closing stages of extra-time.
Gave the ball away frequently so it wasn't a major surprise when he was hauled off just after the hour mark.
Always a threat in the air he acted more as a link man for Kewell. Tried to bundle in a goal in the second half and was subbed in extra-time
Pumped in plenty of long balls and had a go with strikes from range. Nothing special but not bad either.
Had plenty of good press going into the game but it must have gone to his head as he wasted a great chance in the opening moments. His corner kicks were poor but his overall performance did improve as the game wore on.
Looked to have too much adrenaline early on and nearly gave away a penalty. Earned a booking for a trip in a tenacious display.
Missed a glut of chances including Australia's best one in the second half when he was clean through on goal only to strike straight at the 'keeper. Had his chance to make history for his country and blew it.
Without him Japan wouldn't be celebrating in Qatar tonight. His series of outstanding saves denied Australia and Kewell in particular and was rightly awarded man of the match. Terrific.
Made a handful of good interventions when Australia were on top in a tidy showing.
Although he was beaten in the air far too often for comfort he did deliver some excellent crosses during the contest which earns him a higher grade.
Found it hard to cope with the physical ability of Cahill and too often was beaten in the air by the Everton player.
Excellent down the flank as he whizzed in lots of top notch deliveries. Saved his best for last when, clearly tired, he arrowed in the assist for Lee's winner.
Useful when he was called upon to make tackles in midfield. Blazed a shot over the bar and grew tired as the game wore on.
Sloppy at times he was guilty of giving the ball away and made a hash of some corners. Took one decent free-kick.
Replacing Shinji Kagawa was always going to be a tough task and Fujimoto looked a bit overawed by the occasion before he was replaced.
Had his half-chances but again lacked the conviction which his replacement had in abundance.
Awarded a trophy after the match saluting his performances in the tournament but it wasn't on this display. Threaded through some neat passes but was pushed off the ball too often and drifted in and out of the game.
Wasted Japan's best chance when he failed to even get his header on target. His head dropped further after that and never looked like scoring.

Made far more of an impression than Holman when he came on after an hour. Tried his luck with shots and went close with one drive in extra time.
Almost the hero after he came on for the wasteful Kewell when his first touch from a strong header nearly crept in.

Tightened things up at the back when he was introduced giving Japan greater assurance in the air. A smart substitution by Alberto Zaccheroni

What an introduction! Scored his first international goal in superb style as his perfectly executed volley sealed the victory for Japan courtesy of the substitute.
