Thanks for your replies to my question about what was your favourite goal of the La Liga season so far. I've enjoyed reading through all of your tweets, and it appears there is a lot of love for Cristiano Ronaldo's backheel against Rayo and Lionel Messi's opportunist free-kick against Atletico. My favourite... Karim Benzema's recent volley againt Osasuna! Thank you for joining me for Goal.com's coverage of tonight's game. Good night.
FULL-TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-4 Real Madrid. Mourinho's side recorded their second 4-1 victory over Atletico this season, with Ronaldo again helping himself to a hat-trick. After a fairly even first half, Madrid shifted through a couple of gears after half-time, despite Atletico making it 1-1 through Falcao after 55 minutes. A further brace from Ronaldo increased Madrid's lead before Callejon added his name to the scoresheet with a well-struck effort late one. The win restores Madrid's four points lead at the top of La Liga, with El Clasico to look forward to next week!
90' + 2'
Yellow Card Koke
90' + 2'
Ronaldo goes down inside the centre circle after a fairly cynical block from Koke, and the Atletico player receives a yellow card for the foul. That is the last passage of play in this game as the referee then blows the final whistle.
There will be two minutes of added time here.
ATLETICO NEARLY SCORE A SECOND!!! Filipe Luis does brilliantly to get past Arbeloa down the left before pulling the ball back to Diego. The Brazilian midfielder's effort is a good one, but despite beating Casillas, it does not beat the post, and comes crashing back out before being cleared by Pepe.
Assist Cristiano Ronaldo
Goal José Callejón
CALLEJON INCREASES MADRID'S LEAD!!!! The youngster has only been on the pitch three minutes but that's enough time for him to make an impact. Ronaldo sweeps a pass to him on the right, and he carries the ball into the area before firing a hard low effort through Courtois' legs and into the back of the net.
SAVE BY COURTOIS!!! Ronaldo races on to a deflection and looks to chip the ball over the Atletico keeper, but the Belgian youngster does well to make himself big and block the Madrid attacker's effort.
Atletico win a corner on the right but the cross is poor and after Ramos heads it up in the air Casillas comes off his line to catch it.
Ángel Di María
Assist Gonzalo Higuaín
Penalty Goal Cristiano Ronaldo
GOOOALLLL!!!! Ronaldo shows his composure by calmly slotting the ball past Courtois to complete his hat-trick and give his side a 3-1 lead. Slightly unfortunate for the Atletico keeper Courtois, as the ball appeared to hit a bump that diverted it over his arm and into the back of the net.
PENALTY TO MADRID!!!! The substitute Higuain goes down under a challenge from Diego Godin. The defender has run across the attacker there, and a penalty looks to be the correct decision.
Another header from Falcao, and another save from Casillas. This time his effort is lacking the necessary power to really trouble Casillas, with the Madrid keeper comfortably catching the ball.
Yellow Card Ángel Di María
Just as I say that, Falcao heads a firm effort just over Casillas' bar after a decent cross from the right by Adrian.
Do Atletico have what it takes to get back into this one?? They have certainly ruffled a few Madrid feathers this evening, and have created a number of chances over the course of the game.
Di Maria demonstrates his preference for shooting with his left foot. The ball runs through to him on the right-hand side of the area and he takes an absolute age to get a shot away with his right foot after trying to shift the ball back on to his favoured left. His eventual shot is tame and easily dealt with by Courtois.
Diego Godin clears the ball away from danger inside his own area as Higuain immediately looks to get in on the goalscoring action.
Assist Xabi Alonso
Goal Cristiano Ronaldo
WOW!!!!!! THAT IS ANOTHER OUT OF THIS WORLD EFFORT FROM CRISTIANO RONALDO!!! You just don't stop those. He picks the ball up wide on the left, cuts onto his right, before rifling an unstoppable effort high into the back of the net from 25 yards out.
Di Maria takes it, and his fine cross lands right on the head of Cristiano Ronaldo, but his header is wayward and goes over the bar.
The corner is cleared to safety by the Atletico defence, but Madrid quickly work the ball back into a threatening area on the edge of the box, resulting in Di Maria winning a free-kick on the right after being hauled down by Filipe Luis.
Madrid win a corner after Ronaldo goes hurtling down the left before having a cross deflected behind by Godin.
Ramos is in the right place at the right time to intercept Falcao's low cross inside the area, with Adrian waiting to pounce just yards behind him!
Arbeloa has been an available outlet high on the right for Madrid throughout this game, but on this occasion, he is nearly caught out. After floating a ball into the box that is cleared to safety, Atletico break quickly into the space left by Arbeloa, but luckily for him Pepe is on hand to win the ball back form Falcao.
Yellow Card Filipe Luis
Bear in mind folks, if the score stays the same here, Madrid will be just two points clear at the top of La Liga, and they still have a game against Barcelona to play next week. This result could have a huge impact on the title race.
Yellow Card Xabi Alonso
COENTRAO SHOOTS INTO THE SIDE NETTING!! A fine ball from Ozil sets the Portuguese player free inside the Atletico area, and he fires an effort towards goal that is palmed into the side netting by Courtois.
Goal Radamel Falcao
GOAALLLL!!!! AND IT IS AN EQUALISER FOR ATLETICO!!! Falcao grabs his 21st goal of the season, after a well-worked move down the left. The cross is put in from the left by Adrian and somehow Falcao gets in-between Coentrao and Ramos to head the ball home from 15 yards.
Casillas goes racing off his line to try and keep the ball from going out for a corner, and handles it after it has gone behind, strangely the referee thinks otherwise and fails to award an Atletico corner.
Sami Khedira finds a yard of space outside the area but his shot is wayward, and is not even close to troubling Courtois in the Atletico goal.
Falcao heads over from the set piece under pressure from Sergio Ramos, and Madrid have the ball back once more.
Corner to Atletico...
Ronaldo can't repeat his first-half effort though, with the ball swerving high over the bar and out for a goal-kick.
Real Madrid have another free-kick in a dangerous position, 30 yards out, just right of centre...
He eventually dusts himself down and is fit to continue, and Madrid immediately launch an attack down the left through Coentrao that ends with a cross straight into the arms of Courtois.
Arbeloa is fouled by Adrian on the near side and the Madrid right-back looks like he might be in quite a bit of pain.
Mourinho replaces Kaka with Mesut Ozil at half-time. If I'm being honest, I barely noticed the Brazilian in the first half, which is a shame because he's put in some top notch performances recently.
And we are back underway at the Vicente Calderon. Let's hope for a second half as open and exciting as the first!
@thefrenchway reckons Ronaldo's back-heel against Rayo was the best goal this season, while @alayyyar plumps for Messi's outrageous free-kick against Atletico. Thibaut Courtois hasn't had too much luck against Messi and Ronaldo this season has he? Haha. Keep your opinions coming, and I'll reveal my favourite at the end of the game!
After Ronaldo's free-kick in that first half, it's got me thinking, what do you guys think has been the best goal in La Liga this season? Send your choices to @charliefscott.
HALF-TIME: Atletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid. Ronaldo's fabulous free-kick separates the two sides at the Vicente Calderon, with Atletico no doubt feeling slightly aggrieved to be going in at the interval a goal down after creating a number of chances in what has been an open and entertaining first half. Join me back here in ten minutes for the second half as Madrid attempt to restore their four point lead at the top of La Liga!
And there is the half-time whistle, bang on 45 minutes.
There are some handbags late in the half as Xabi Alonso drags Diego down on the half-way line. Remember guys, an Alonso booking tonight would rule him out of their match against Sporting at the weekend, meaning he goes into El Clasico next week with a clean slate. Not that I'm suggesting anything.
A well-timed tackle from Gabi on Ronaldo stops a Madrid attack in its tracks, as Mourinho's side had four against three going into the Atletico area.
THAT'S A CLOSE CALL FROM THE LINESMAN!! DIego plays a lovely one-two with Tiago, continuing his run into the box, and he looks to be onside as he receives the return pass, but the linesman on the near side flags him off, with replays showing it is the correct decision.
GOOD SAVE FROM COURTOIS!!! Ronaldo jinks past Juanfran with a couple of stepovers before shooting towards the near post from the left-hand side of the area. Courtois' positioning is good though, and he is on hand to tip the ball away for a corner.
Luis Perea is lucky to get away with that one! The Atletico centre-back gives the ball away with an extremely casual pass out of defence, but he luckily redeems himself by reading Alonso's pass to Benzema and taking back possession.
Yellow Card Arbeloa
Ronaldo is bringing out the tricks already. Instead of controlling the ball from a throw like any normal footballer would, he chooses to play a pass with his thigh over two Atletico players to Xabi Alonso. Lovely stuff!
BENZEMA SHOULD SCORE!!!! Di Maria curls an inch-perfect in-swinging ball into the path of the Frenchman inside the area, but his header is off target, much to the relief of Atletico's stationary defence.
There's some activity on the Atletico bench as Diego Simeone gets up to remonstrate with the officials following a Tiago foul on Angel Di Maria. He can't have any complaints about that one though I'm afraid, it was a good old-fashioned cynical block!
Filipe Luis hooks a great ball into the Madrid area from the left that has Casillas stuck on his line, but it is just too high for the despairing dive of Falcao.
I've just seen a replay of Ronaldo's free-kick and I definitely didn't do it justice with my description!! The technique is absolutely superb. Try and catch this one if you can later on, the swerve and movement on the ball after it leaves his boot is unbelievable. A truly great goal from Ronaldo, his 50th of the season!!
That goal is going to really hurt Atletico, as they have been arguably the better side in this opening half an hour. Let's see how they react to going a goal behind.
Goal Cristiano Ronaldo
GOOOAALLLLLL!!!!!!!!! There I was questioning his decision to shoot from there and the Portuguese star just goes and pops it in the top corner from 35 yards. WHAT A STRIKE!! Courtois had absolutely no hope of keeping that one out. 1-0 to Real!!
Benzema is down on the turf, rolling this way and that, after a foul by Perea, and Madrid have a free-kick a long way out. Not that that is going to stop a certain Mr. Ronaldo.
Ronaldo is appealing for a penalty there, but the referee Carlos Delgado Ferreiro is having absolutely none of it. I've seen them given! Madrid have no time to argue as their opponents go straight up the other end and have a shot on goal, Tiago's curling effort deflected over the crossbar for a corner by Sergio Ramos.
Congratulations @SarahThLu for sending me the fastest correct answer. Madrid have scored 100 goals in La Liga this season, in just 31 games.
There's space down the right for Madrid, but they are failing to exploit it at the moment. Arbeloa has overlapped and got into a number of promising positions already but the ball has either gone left every time, or the pass has been too late for him to cause any immediate damage.
ANOTHER FREE-KICK TO ATLETICO! This one is fairly central, 40 yards from goal, Gabi takes it, lifting it over the Madrid wall towards Falcao, but the ball is overhit and runs out for a Madrid goal-kick.
An Atletico corner is eventually cleared by Sergio Ramos after ricocheting off a number of players inside the Madrid penalty area.
Di Maria tries to play a cute through-ball to Karim Benzema but the Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is alert to the danger and rushes out to claim the ball.
Free-kick to Atletico 40 yards out. Diego aims it at the head of Falcao, but he is crowded out in the area by a blanket of white shirts, and Casillas comes off his line to take possession of the ball.
Whoever sends the quickest correct answer to the following question to @charliefscott on Twitter, will get a shoutout on here. How many goals have Real Madrid scored in the league so far this season?
That is dealt with by Atletico's well-organised backline, and they immediately try and work the ball forward to Falcao.
Madrid win a corner after Ronaldo did well down the left before sending a cross towards the back-post that Godin could only push behind.
Atletico's skilful playmaker Diego is unceremoniously dumped to the turf in the middle of the pitch after dancing past a couple of challenges. He looks far from pleased about that!
The Real defence are looking a bit shaky early on here!
GOOD SAVE BY CASILLAS!!!!! Falcao races through on goal and strikes a firm effort towards Casillas' near post but the Spanish international is equal to it, and tips the ball around the post to safety.
Iker Casillas comes off his line well to claim the ball after a promising cross had been whipped in from the left for Atletico by Arda Turan.
It's been a bright start from both sides, both teams seem intent on attacking and the ball is going from end-to-end at the moment.
There appears to be some pushing and shoving inside the area, but the ball is cleared away by Madrid's defence.
Atletico have a free-kick on the left and Diego looks set to take it...
The game has kicked off and Angel Di Maria has already had a shot on goal in the opening minute, but it is comfortably saved.
The teams are out and we are close to kick off...
Don't forget you can tweet me your views before the game kicks off and throughout the action tonight, by sending your messages to @charliefscott. To get us underway, who thinks Ronaldo is going to get his 50th goal of the season tonight? AND, does anyone think that Ronaldo, Coentrao or Xabi Alonso might pick up a booking tonight, which would result in a one game suspension? The reason I ask... Madrid play Sporting at the weekend, followed by Barcelona a week today. Mourinho is not going to want to go into that match against Sporting with players on the brink of a suspension...
Atletico are boosted by the return of forwards Adrian and Radamel Falcao, as both had been doubtful with flu in the run up to the game.
Mourinho has decided to choose Coentrao over Marcelo in defence, while Di Maria starts alongside Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo in a line of three forwards behind the in-form Karim Benzema.
Madrid welcome back Fabio Coentrao and Angel Di Maria to their starting XI, but Mesut Ozil and Gonzalo Higuain have to make do with a place on the bench.
Subs: Adan, Varane, Albiol, Granero, Ozil, Callejon, Higuain
Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Casillas; Arbeloa, Ramos, Pepe, Coentrao; Xabi Alonso, Khedira; Kaka, Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo; Benzema
Subs: Asenjo, Dominguez, Assuncao, Fran Merida, Pizzi, Koke, Pedro
Atletico Madrid (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Juanfran, Perea, Godin, Filipe Luis; Gabi, Tiago; Diego, Arda Tura, Adrian; Falcao
Without further ado, here are the starting line-ups:
And what a game we have in store tonight: El Derbi Madrileno as they call it in Spain. Real Madrid sit in first place in La Liga but over the past month have had one eye firmly looking over their shoulder as Pep Guardiola's Barcelona have closed the gap between second and first, from ten points to just one. Victory this evening would take them four points clear with an El Clasico still to come on April 21. Atletico meanwhie go into this fixture having not experienced the sweet taste of victory over Madrid in over a decade, and let me tell you, that has got to hurt. A win tonight, at such a crucial stage in the season, and after so many years of heartbreak, would no doubt be wildly celebrated in the red and white half of Spain's capital city.
