Atletico Madrid 3-0 Osasuna: Diego Forlan And Kun Aguero Put Ten-Man Los Rojillos To The Sword

The Uruguayan hitman has rediscovered his form.

Atletico Madrid ended their three-game winless streak on Saturday night as they overcame Osasuna in a fairly one-sided affair at the Vicente Calderon. Diego Forlan put the hosts infront in the 26th minute and four minutes before half-time Sergio Aguero doubled Los Colchoneros' lead. The Uruguayan ace completed his brace in the second period as Atletico climbed to fifth in the standings.

The game started slowly with neither team putting much effort into finding the go-ahead goal. The first chance of the game fell to Diego Forlan in the 17th minute, when the striker was released brilliantly on the right side of the box by Sergio Aguero, but failed to put his volley past Ricardo.

Four minutes later the Argentine found himself face to face with the goalkeeper, but could not chip the ball over him from close range. A goal, however, did come moments later when Diego Forlan pounced on a spilt ball on the right of the box and calmly finished in the right corner.

The goal gave needed impulse in Osasuna's play and the visitors were twice denied by some wonderful saves by David De Gea. However, it was Los Colchoneros who doubled their lead four minutes before the half-time whistle when Sergio Aguero headed in a Forlan cross past Ricardo from close range. Atletico entered the break with a solid and deserved lead and the game seemed to be as good as over.

In the second period the tempo rapidly dropped as it seemed that the match was being played out. Los Rojiblancos considered to be the more active team on the pitch, created numerous half-chances through Simao and Jose Antonio Reyes, but could not put them away.

Atletico did manage to put the game beyond doubt after Los Rojillos had Nacho Monreal sent off. In the 70th minute Forlan completed his brace with a fine finish to make it three as the game was slipping away from the visitors. Osasuna tried to fight back, but were struggling to create any clear-cut chances. The game started to look increasingly like a training session as neither team seemed willing to change the scoreline.

Ultimately, Los Colchoneros continued the tradition of winning right after the Madrid derby with a well-deserved 3-0 victory.

Following tonight's result, Atleti are fifth in the standings, while Osasuna are 12th. Los Rojiblancos' next game is a visit to Real Sociedad, while Los Rojillos host Sporting Gijon.
