A late penalty save from Luca Castellazzi saved the day for the Nerazzuri after German Denis' header had canceled out Wesley Sneijder's deflected strike.
A penalty save from Luca Castellazzi saved the day for Inter, and kept the score at 1-1 at the Atleti Azzurri d'Italia on Wednesday evening.
Earlier, a German Denis header had canceled out Wesley Sneijder's deflected strike to keep Atalanta's unbeaten home record intact.
The game opened in a frenetic fashion, with Inter having the best of the early possession. It was the home side though that had the first real opportunity of the game - Federico Peluso with a free header after six minutes, easily saved by Julio Cesar.
Atalanta manged to wrestle back the majority of the possession, and was proving dangerous down the right side. Matias Schelotto, in particular, caused Yuto Nagatomo all sorts of problems.
With half an hour gone, Inter was still on the ropes. Atalanta's width was proving a real source of opportunity, but without any actual cutting edge. And that lack of killer instinct in front of goal proved fatal on 32 minutes.
Mauro Zarate charged down the right-hand flank, played a short ball inside to Sneijder, who, from 25 yards out fired a shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the net to give Inter a 1-0 lead.
Atalanta soon rallied, and on the stroke of halftime it was level. A Moralez cross from the left-hand touchline found Denis unmarked inside the box, and he stroked his header past Cesar to make the scoreline 1-1 going into the break.
As with the first half, the second 45 started with Inter having the lion's share of possession, but with the hosts created more of the chances. Bonaventura had the best of those chances. His shot-come-cross on 50 minutes almost beat Nerazzuri's substitute 'keeper Luca Castellazi at his near post.
The introduction of Giampaolo Pazzini on the hour mark, eventually gave Inter more of a solid base to its attack, but it was his striker partner who missed the best chance of the half. A cross from the right by Maicon found Diego Milito, but the Argentine chested the ball over the bar from four yards out.
It could have been even worse for the visitors on the stroke of full-time however. Chivu gave away a needless penalty in the 90th minute, but Castellazzi saved the resulting spot kick, much to the relief of his teammates.
The draw moves Atalanta up to 13th in the table as it travels away to Bologna on Sunday. Meanwhile, Claudio Ranieri's men continue to flounder in 16th as they host Juventus in the Derby D'Italia on Saturday.
