That's it! Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester United is the final score. Hardly the most inspiring game from either side, but United did enough to earn the win and close the gap with archrival Manchester City. Villa struggled to cope with United's movement, especially in the first half, and seemingly lacked the ideas necessary to beat a top-tier side like United.

Welbeck has it in the net for United! But he was just a little late on his run and found himself offside on Rooney's pass.

Good look for Wayne Rooney as he controls and gets in between two Villa defenders, but doesn't get it on target.

Danny Welbeck makes a mazy run into the Aston Villa area, but the United substitute just can't quite come up with the end product.

Emile Heskey has given Bent a partner up top, but the two-striker setup has failed to bring a serious threat to Lindegaard's goal.

Nani finds a little space in the area and nearly squeezes off a shot but is closed down by Bannan.
  • 53'
The home side has shown a bit more endeavor since the restart, but still hasn't been able to test Lindegaard. United continues to exploit the space it has found in midfield, but likewise hasn't tested Brad Guzan in the Villa goal.
  • 46'
The second half is underway and Villa's fans will be hoping for a vast improvement from the first half.
  • 45' + 8'
Halftime, and it couldn't come soon enough for Aston Villa, which looks lackluster across the field. United could be two or three up, but hasn't been able to make Villa pay for its lack of ambition.
  • 45' + 6'
Aston Villa has held United at bay for the last half hour, but hasn't been able to generate any attack. The team's clearances find no Villa player in the visiting half and essentially amount to giveaways the way the team is playing.
  • 45'
Eight added minutes at the end of the first half, owing to the delays from injuries to Javier Hernandez and Shay Given.
  • 41'
First action of the match for Anders Lindegaard as he has to be alert to punch away a cross from Albrighton. Still, United looks comfortable as it strokes the ball around.
  • 38'
    SubstitutionShay Given Bradley Guzan
  • 38'
Given looks to be struggling after coming a long way off his line to clear a ball, and American goalkeeper Brad Guzan is coming on.
  • 32'
Manchester United is completely bossing the match, moving the ball well in midfield and finding plenty of space to do so. Valencia's shot from outside the area goes just over, with a second United goal certainly in the air.
  • 27'
Aston Villa has looked very limited going forward, and hasn't been able to connect on the few set pieces it has managed to achieve,
  • 25'
Defensive lapse from Villa as Dunne gives the ball away to Rooney, who gives it to Valencia. The Ecuadorian's cross finds Nani's head, but the Portuguese headed it too close to Shay Given, who turned it away.

GOAL UNITED! No surprise there, with the visitors dominating. Nani finds himself in plenty of space down the left and crosses right onto the foot of Phil Jones, who nets his first Premier League goal.
  • 16'
The initial diagnosis for Hernandez is a twisted ankle, but he will have to undergo more tests.
  • 15'
The visitors are looking comfortable now that play has restarted, but have yet to seriously test Shay Given in the Villa goal.
  • 12'
    SubstitutionJavier Hernández Antonio Valencia

Hernandez is stretchered off, and Antonio Valencia will be the man to replace him, with Nani moving centrally, allowing the Ecuadorian to play in his favored wide right position.
  • 8'
Javier Hernandez is on the field receiving treatment and it looks like he will have to substituted. He caught his ankle in the grass in Villa's area, and it just went out from under him, putting him in visible pain.
  • 5'
It has been a fairly tepid early five minutes, with both sides struggling to break the deadlock in midfield.
